You are viewing a n antique early Victorian painted silhouette of a large family 11 including the dog/pony! I would estimate it was painted sometime around 1840. This silhouette is one of three all from the same source, and all three were painted on card on the back of an old print. It also looks like all three silhouettes were framed at some point as they show evidence of yellowing where a frame once displayed them. This silhouette measures approximately 4 1/4 inches by 8 inches and has been matted in a modern mat which measures 6 1/2 by 9 1/4 inches. It is in great condition with no tears or holes. Some minor yellowing to the card where it was once framed. All items I sell are fully guaranteed to be as I have described them. Most of my auctions are listed with no reserve. Georgian Painted Silhouette Folk Art Oval Fruitwood Frame English Circa 1810

This original 19th century painted silhouette has a great charm to it. Its original oval frame, detailed bronzed profile and gentle antique colouring allow it to become a firm favourite that will blend with ease in to an existing silhouette or folk art grouping. Although unsigned we can date this silhouette to the 1790 to 1810 period by the fashion and in particular the cap that this older lady is wearing. This style of lace/ organdy cap was popular from the 1750’s until the end of the century. It has a very ornate double width pleated frill divided by a central ribboned band that secures at the nape of the neck. The puffed crown of this cap is made of fine sprigged lace netting or fine grade muslin. This type of cap was often referred to as a Dormeuse Cap. This older lady wears a small frill around her neck with draped handkerchief tucked in to her waistline. When examined under magnification you can see that our example is painted in black textured paint upon a plain paper. We have not examined this silhouette outside of the frame and so at this stage cannot tell if the paper is laid or wove. The old paper is clearly unbleached which you can tell from the gentle darkening with age. The female sitter has a vast amount of detail lavished up on her by the use of bronzing (the addition of gold highlights). This gilt embellishment really brings the sitter to life as light, shadow and intricate folds and pleats are all apparent on her headwear and clothing. Housed within a contemporary oval fruitwood frame with its original top hanger. Frame Size: 4 7/8″ (12.5 cm) by 4 2/8″ (11 cm). Visible silhouette 3.25″ (8.5 cm) by 2.75″ (7 cm). Condition: Good but not perfect. The paper ground has two historic watermarks, one feint one at 6 o’clock and a smaller but darker one at 4 o’clock. The original oval frame has an old and good repair at 12 o’clock -so, so common with oval frames. There is wear to the top outer edge where we suspect that a few old nibbles to the frame edge have been sanded smooth. The glass has probably been replaced at some point as the backing paper is not the original. This is a delightful George III era profile just waiting to become part of a new family grouping. Detail in the work is excellent as can be seen in the photos. The paper has a Hubard Gallery mark in the lower left and appears to be the original frame. The frame measures 13.5 x 10″ with the sight of the image measuring about 10.4 x 6.75″. There is some discoloring in the top corners and the front glass is missing. A great early portrait from a well listed artist. In addition, please ask all questions at least 12 hours prior to a lot closing. Measuring 6 3/8″ by 8 1/8″ under the early thin glass this hand painted Silhouette depicts a father with his daughter on his knee. The Folk Artist has finely hand painted the details in gold and the gentleman’s hair in white. Unsigned, this large Folk Art Silhouette is in original clean condition and come in the original 10 5/8″ by 12 3/8″, gilded brass of wood frame. In her very tiny folk art hands is a single purple flower. This silhouette painting measures 2 5/8″ by 3 3/8″ and it comes in a 4 ½” by 5 ¼” gilt brass frame. I guarantee that they are both from the 18. Century and they are in original, unrestored condition. In the photographs of the back you will see that both 2 ¾” by 3 ½”, Ink Wash Paintings are still sealed under early thin glass, in the original 3 7/8″ by 4 5/8″ Brass Frames. The backs were sealed in early laid-paper. Hand written on the paper is a statement from the original artist; Ladies & Gents may have more copies without the inconvenience of a second sitting. ” The back of the officer has the added statement, “Old Shades accurately reduced & draf’d in the present taste, by Clarke Church Yard, Exeter.
