This charming rural farm scene depicts two women carrying pails beside a white fence, with cattle, chickens, a barn and a windmill in the background. The painting has a wonderful Wisconsin regional character and captures an idealized glimpse of early 20th-century farm life. Gustav Behncke was a German-born artist, muralist and decorative painter who settled in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in the 19th century and remained active there for decades. His work can be found in historic Oshkosh collections and public institutions, including the Oshkosh Public Museum and Oshkosh Public Library. Behncke painted a wide range of subjects during his long career, including landscapes, maritime scenes, religious works and regional subjects.
