Antique English 19thC Folk Art Portrait Miniature Painting of Lady Dated 1835/36

From my own collection, this is an antique portrait miniature painting of a lady in a wonderful early 19thc yellow-brown dress with large full sleeves, her waist is belted high, as was the fashion. A white lace edged collar and long necklace complete her look. I bought this from an antique dealer in England several years ago. She has something written in ink on the back wooden panel, but the ink has faded and I cannot read it, other than a date, which is 1835 or 36. The portrait part of this measures 6 x 5″, the framed piece is 10 1/4 x 9″. It is 1 1/2 deep. This is in the original frame, which has wear commensurate with age, and I have photographed so you can see it. ALVA GENE DEXHIMER FOLK ART PAINTING OUTSIDER VINTAGE Lady Dark hair#2

This early painting is an expressive one. Is by ALVA JEAN DEXHEIMER FOLK ARTIST. Alva Gene Dexhimer was born in Clarksburg, Missouri in 1931 and lived in central Missouri his entire life. As a five-year old boy, he fell off a tractor and suffered a severe head injury. This accident led to learning disabilities, which caused him to drop out of school after the eighth grade. Dexhimer constructed in his life time a variety of objects from scrap wood, using only a hammer and a handsaw as tools. Comicbooks with a western theme were among his favorites, and movie cowboys like Gene Autry appear in his work. In 1984, he included Dexhimer’s work in FOLK ART/FOR SALE, an exhibition for the Kansas City Art Institute. Shortly thereafter, his work was included in Deliberate Lives – A Celebration of Three Missouri Masters at First Street Forum in St. Louis, Word and Image in American Folk Art (for the Mid-America Arts Alliance) and The Radiant Object–Self-Taught Artists from the Volkersz Collection which was organized by Montana State University. Complications from this disease led to a stroke and, several months later, to his death at the age of 52 in 1984. 1920s Antique Vtg Folk Art Deco Lady Reverse Foil Painting, Gesso Wood Frame

The painting is what is called a reverse painting – the painting is directly onto the back of the glass. The painting features a wonderful Art Deco lady surrounded by a black background, with butterflies. The details are picked out in crushed colored foil, giving the painting the most wonderful shine and gorgeous details. The piece is unsigned, and is in overall excellent condition. The frame has been repainted from it’s original color to a copper color, probably at the same time the painting was done. It is a really unusual and gorgeous piece of Art Deco folk art. The overall size, frame edge to frame edge, measures 14″ by 17″. The frame has a wooden back, that has been reinforced with tape. The inside picture size is 9 1/2″ by 11 1/2″.
