Antique Old American California Folk Art Painted Wood Sign, Catalina Island

This is a rare and historically significant Antique Old American California Folk Art Painted Wood Sign, for Roy’s French Restaurant on Southern California’s famed Catalina Island. This painted sign appears to be painted on an old boat’s rudder and exhibits clear signs of decades of wear and use. This piece reads: Roy’s French Restaurat. For Ladies and Gentlemen. This sign approximately dates to the 1940’s – 1950”s. Unfortunately, I could not find any information on this establishment. This sign reveals it was a mainstay on Catalina Island since 1919. Perhaps you have eaten there, or know more about it? Approximately 40 1/2 inches wide x 33 inches tall. Good condition for age and use, with obvious signs of outdoor usage, wood splitting, scuffing, etc. Acquired from an old collection in Los Angeles County, California. This small size mobile “Cinema” operators were equipped with a television a Video and sometimes with a small portable generator and were moving from town to town from village to village operating and showing their films! (During the day inside social clubs or houses and during the night in the open air). In order to attract more customers and in order to advertise their mission and business the need of huge posters was created and born. Talented artists after viewing the film were creating large size posters using oil paint on canvas (Because of unavailability and high cost of imported canvas , The artists were using used flour sacks sewn together). The artist had the freedom to add or change scenes seen or not seen in the film in order to make the poster more attractive (This is the reason that this hand painted posters are more interesting as ART than the normal posters since each of this hand painted poster is UNIQUE and except the film content it also express the artist himself). These posters were rolled or folded and easy to move around with the mobile Cinema. Because of the posters ” hard ” life (Folded or rolled, under the rain and sun and display for several months during their rounds all over Ghana) most of the surviving posters have damage at the end of the canvas, peelings, cracking and other damages. By the mid 1990s the mobile Cinema business declined and almost collapsed since television and video was more widely available in Ghana. The profits of the mobile Cinema operators were also reduced and they were not able to afford the “expensive” talented artists to paint their posters anymore. At the present days they have to rely with Photocopy paper posters in order to survive and reduce cost. Very interesting painting by unknown primitive artist depicts a man handing out advert leaflets for a performance. Behind him are posters glued to a wood fence. They advertise performances at both the Providence Opera house and Theatre Comique, also a Providence venue famous at the time. EDWARD LANGE 1846-1912 American FOLK ART Painting Long Island NY Signed 1880

Rare EDWARD LANGE American Folk Art Drawing/Painting Long Island NY Artist Signed Dated 1880 plus book “Edward Lange’s Long Island”. Signed and dated lower right. Watercolor and gouache on paper. We took the piece out of the frame to examine it and found that the paper is watermarked with the name “Whatman 1878″. The edges of the paper have very slight foxing. 5 1/4″ x 11 3/4″. It is framed in an Eastlake frame that has some wear. Overall size is 8 1/4″ x 14 3/4″. The scene is of several buildings, a train, horse and buggies and people walking. One building has a sign that reads “Store” and to the right of that is a horse drawn omnibus with North Port written on the side. Also, on the bottom A. Smith is written in block letters. It somewhat resembles the Saint James depot. It is probably on what is now called the Port Jefferson line of the Long Island Railroad where Lange is known to have painted a number of stations. Quality examples of Lange’s work rarely come to the market. In addition to the painting, there is the softcover book entitled “Edward Lange’s Long Island”. 67 pages, bibliography, notes , illustrations with 76 color and b&w reproductions of the artist’s paintings and drawings. Edward Lange (1846- 1912) was born in Germany and emigrated to New York with his family sometime in the 1860’s. By 1870 Lange and his wife, Susan Denton of Brooklyn, were living in Elwood, Long Island. He was probably self taught but influenced by artists and prints produced by them during the 1860’s and 1870’s including James Bard, Jurgen Fredrick Huge, Currier and Ives, George Durrie and Louis Prang. He can be credited with recording the landscape and townscape of Long Island before its period of tremendous growth in the 1880’s. His attention to detail gives insight into the architecture, daily life, business activities and agriculture of rural Long Island. His watercolors and drawings capture both the bucolic and nostalgic character of Long Island on the cusp of change and the coming of the iron horse which stimulated business and tourism.
