AAFA 19c Folk Art Oil Painting of Old Oaken Bucket after Frederick Styles Agate. This is a charming estate found American folk art oil painting on canvas dating to the 19th century. The beautiful scene features a young boy taking a drink of water from a bucket he has hoisted from the well. His two canine companions are also eager for refreshment. Agate studied under Samuel F. Morse at the National Academy of Fine Arts in New York City. In overall very good condition. It is professionally relined at the back. There is crackling to the paint surface throughout. This condition is consistent with age and method of display/storage. The frame is 23 1/2″ x 19 1/4″ with a sight view of 17 5/8″ x 13 3/4″. The stretcher is 18 1/4″ x 14 1/4″. Original painting by Gerard Fortune. Canvas size without frame is 40 x 24 inches. Frame size is 44 3/8 x 27 1/2 inches. Man with young boy in matching blue fashionable suits and shoes. Surrounded by flowers against a yellow background. Both are wearing matching black shoes. Vintage lived with condition, the canvas painting is intact. NOTE: The gold paint on frame at top is worn from storage and age. Gold paint that’s been chipped off has been touched up with acrylic paint. BEING THAT THE CHIPPED PAINT ON TOP OF FRAME IT’S NOT VISIBLE WHEN IT’S HUNG. Signature is on left lower front side. “Gerard” with black paint. Looks like acrylic but may be oil on CANVAS. The frame is the original frame Gerard and his dealer in Haiti placed on it. Oil painting on CANVAS by known Haitian prolific artist Gerard Fortune. This piece has been in Mr. Lawerences primitive art collection for over 30 years. I uploaded a photo of Mr. Lawrence (left), Gerard Fortune (center) and another artist (right) Jordon Meinster. Lawrence Roseman, owner of painting, said it was common for Gerard to paint friends. Associates and workers daily for his subjects. From the collection of retired gallerist and rug/textile dealer. Who worked directly with Gerard Fortune in Port-au-Prince during 1980’s. Gerard worked as a private cook in a home, and restaurant. By 1981 he was no longer working as a cook. He worked directly with Gallery Issa, a Palestinian gallerist who supplied Gerard with a studio to paint in. Gerard was prolific averaging 2 paintings a day. Gerards exact age is unknown, but Roseman believes he was born 1925, although some believe 1934-5. Roseman said Gerard was turning out his naive folk art in late 70’s and eventually formed an association with Gallery Issa by 1981. Gerard would come to Issas gallery with a stack of masonite boards and paint on the ground floor garage on his knees. He’d keep a copy of his signature so he could duplicate it because he didn’t know how to read or write. Works are in museum collections. Write ups in Art’s and Antiques Magazine. Offering a late 19th century oil on board portrait painting of a young girl in the naive taste. Discovered in Northwest Connecticut, this primitive piece displays a beautiful child in period dress holding a butterfly in her left hand as she points to it with her right hand; accompanying her is a cute dog with an urn to their right, all nestled between flowers; in the background a colonial fenced house, along with trees and birds. Incredible piece that still retains bright colors. Dimensions: frame – 11″ x 13″; sight – 8″ x 10″. Vintage original Oil Painting by Gladys Myers Weaver — painted circa 1940s — Ms. Weaver was a talented local artist from the Dallas, Oregon area who painted with an accurate and wonderful Primitive/ Folk Art style — this work is a rendering of a happy day at home in Pioneer America, possibly a view from the childhood of the artist: there is an incredible amount of detail in this picture from the Grandmother knitting, Dad stoking the fire, Mom nursing the baby, with her older girl looking on curiously-you can even see the outhouse through the open door, all on a spring day — the painting is quite large and painted on board, screwed to a wood frame — the painting measures about 48 by 53 in. // the frame is slightly larger — — a friend of mine is listing another work by Ms. Weaver that is quite interesting. As with any painting hanging for years this is moderately soiled, plus has a couple of small holes — would benefit from professional cleaning. Thank you for visiting our site.
