19th Century Watercolor Painting Primitive Folk Art Amish Man with Sticks & Dog. Pleased to offer a 19th century watercolor on paper with great subject matter and colors. Man with his dog in rural work clothes carrying a bundle of sticks accompanied by his dog. Beautiful large old Birch tree near by. Perhaps he was gathering his sticks from the tree. In the background there is a home with a small pond nearby and other men wearing Amish hats. Wonderful colors and warm sepia and red, black tones to this painting. Frame measures a large 21 3/4 inches height and 17 1/4 inch width. Condition overall is good. But it does have some age-related wear and losses. Painting has a tear on upper right but seems stable. A spot on upper left. Frame shows wear and some loss on corners. The paper on the back has tears. At the top you can see an old wood backing in place. Please view all the photos. By the AMERICAN SCHOOL (20th Century). Signed lower left R. Very good vintage condition. Canvas size: 17in x 21in. He was educated at the University of Florida and the University of the Americas in Mexico, graduating cum laude in June 1961 with a degree in International Relations. From 1961 until 1974, his work required extensive travel in the Southeast for Gulf Oil. In 1964, Smith began painting as a hobby, experimenting with various techniques and styles. He eventually developed his distinctive realistic primitive style. In May 1974, he obtained a license to set up his easel in Jackson Square, Louisiana, where he depicted scenes of southern country life on canvas.

The painting is of people under a tree harvesting fruit or nuts as another person is in the tree with a stick knocking the fruit or nuts out of the tree (see photo). The people on the ground are dress in 19 th century clothing. The painting is on board and is in good condition and is not signed by the artist. The frame has some gold loss (see photo).

Framed 20th Century Oil – English Shorthorn. A naive oil portrait of an over-sized English Shorthorn, standing in a landscape. The artist has painted the animal in a style, mirroring that of original 19th century Folk Art paintings. Presented in a gilt-effect frame with swept rails and elaborate corner mould. Size: 19 x 24cm (7.5″ x 9.4″). Framed Size: 29 x 34cm (11.4″ x 13.4″). Includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
