Mose Tolliver, Mose T, was a self-taught artist. He started painting after a pallet of marble fell on his legs and crushed it while working at the furniture store. Mose began to paint on any surface-furniture, scraps, plywood, packing crate sides, Masonite, metal trays, board remnants, throw away chairs or other abandoned surfaces given to him. Mose used what he calls “pure paint, ” house paint-oil based at first, and then water-based latex. At first, he drew birds and flowers, then he expanded to people and children and some personal requests. Mose used his house on Sayre street as his art gallery. PAINTING FAMOUS HAITIAN ART. Original Haitian art painting for collecting and home or office decoration. 1955 is well known and sought by collectors. Subject: Cotton picking harvest scene. (T) (Frame 25″ X 25″). Medium: Oil on Wood. Very good physical condition. 1955 studied painting at an early age under the instruction of Philome Obin. As a young painter, Edner chose scenes of country life and historical subjects that retrace the epic of the battle for independence of Haiti in 1804. Edner lives in Cap-Haitian where he paints scenes of cotton fields harvested by peasants. When asked, he admits that he doesn’t know where the idea to paint cotton fields came from. Cotton fields are found largely in Gonaives, a place he now visits frequently. He has been included in many international collections and is published in the following: “Kunst aus Haiti” by Ute Stebich, as well as the more recently published “Artistes in Haiti” by Michele Grandjean.
