Fairly Priced to Sell. 25″ x 31″ x 3. Description: This naïf work by Simon Zoto depicts a New England village with a large red schoolhouse as the focal point of the painting. It is painted in the primitive style of an untrained artist with the buildings and trees reduced to an almost pictographic representation. Surrounding the schoolhouse are a number of traditional clapboard houses as well as a large barn-like structure with trees in the background. He always worked in the primitive or naïf style, always painting scenes of New England in a simpler time.

Offered here is a RARE PAIR of American Folk Art. Botanical paintings on velvet material. Condition : excellent antique condition no flaws or stains! These belonged to my mother and she received them as a gift from the artist Mrs. Esther Ball Sherwood (1896 – 1982) of North Haven and Old Saybrooke Ct. Esther painted theses about (1914 -1917). My mom had them re framed in the early 1960s. We added a short bio about Esther’s husband a NYC medical doctor from the. (last photo) we have larger paintings that Esther signed with her initials E. That we are keeping for now. Each weighs close to 1/2 lb. With a 1 lb total weight framed. Size of each in frames is 6 ” tall x 5 ” wide. Painting # 1 is a painting of a Scottish Bull Thistle (wild flower) purple. Painting # 2 is a ” Pink Lady’s Slipper ” orchid. Esther s Theorem paintings and beautiful Tole painting skills were known all around New England. In the 1930s to 1950s.. Especially in New Haven area. I bought this directly from the artist, D. MASTERS KRIEBEL at the Lititz Art Show in 1983 shortly after it was painted. It includes her card. It’s in exactly the same condition as when I bought it. The medium-sized canvas, measuring. Signed by the artist and framed. Here is her description of her artwork. Original folk art paintings are done on gessoed board using acrylics. A series of glazes seal the paintings and a shrink coat is applied to create cracks (the aged appearance). Oils are rubbed in to define the cracks. When dried, the shrink coat is washed off and a series of varnish coats are applied. The paintings are then placed in hand-grained or antique frames.
