23.5 Huichol yarn painting, Mexican Folk art, Wall art, Mexican painting 60-102
23.5 Mexican Huichol Yarn painting 60-102. Lenght 23.5 inches (59.69 cms). Width 23.5 inches (59.69 cms). Thick 1 inches (2.54 cms). This painting is entirely made with yarn applied with beeswax and resin over a sheet of plywood. There’s a description of the painting written by the artist in the back that reads. In this painting we can see a representation of the ritual that’s performed by the marakame for the peyote. The marakame and the pilgrims dance around the peyote so it can bless their offerings and crops. The eagle will carry the message of the shaman for the gods. The deer will guide the shaman during the ritual. In this painting you’ll see a representation of the peyote cactus or hikuri, the shaman or marakame, the muvieri, the gourd bowl, the rattles, the eye of God or Ojo de Dios, the deer or maxa, the snake and the eagle and the eagle or werika. The peyote cactus or “Hikuri”, is a plant that the huichol people keep as their most sacred good used it to open a spiritual connection with their gods. Peyote is the soul of their religious culture and a visionary sacrament that opens a pathway to the other deities. The word “mara’akame” means the one who knows, and is used to refer to the shaman in the huichol tribe. The marakames or shamans are the spiritual leaders. As ambassadors to the gods, shamans preside over ceremonies, recite the divine passages, cure the sick, interpret dreams, etc. He is the nexus with the gods, invoked through the ceremonial use of peyote, and receives instructions from the spirit world through visions, dreams and trances. The muvieri is a stick with feathers used by the marakame in their rituals. It’s a mean to contact their gods and receive their messages. It’s also used to heal, predict the future and in blessings. Sacred Gourds bowls are used by marakames or shamans as containers filled with important symbols, such as corn, animals, and images of family members. For the Huichol people, the Ojo de Dios or God’s eye is symbolic of the power of seeing and understanding that which is unknown and unknowable, The Mystery. The four points represent the elemental processes: earth, fire, air, and water. In a ceremonial meaning, the Ojo de Dios is an offering to the gods to ask for the well being of the children. The parents are in charge of making the eye of god that the children will bring to the “drum ritual”. In this ritual, the children are presented before the gods so they can initiate their life as members of the tribe. Each year they add a new line or rhombus to the eye of good, in the children’s day of birth. The Huichol believe the deer or Maxa represents the heart and is the gatekeeper and guide to the spirit world. The spirit guide Maxa, who leads the shamans on their visionary pathways and teaches them how to gain their special knowledge. The eagle represents the communication bridge between god and men. The snakes guide the shaman or marakame during their rituals and are protectors of the peyote cactus. The Huichol represent one of the few remaining indigenous cultures left in Mexico. They live in self-imposed isolation, having chosen long ago to make their home high in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, in Western Central Mexico. Huichol Art dates back millenia. During spiritual rituals the shaman (know as marakame) have visions which are then transcribed into carvings, yarn art, bead art, pottery etc. Each image has spiritual meaning. The huichol tribe uses many simbols as representations of their deities and other things they deem sacred in their culture. Most common ones are the peyote, the deer and the snake. Madhubani painting,’One with Nature I. Bharti Dayal celebrates life’s natural harmony in the ancient style of Madhubani painting. She mixes vegetable dyes with acrylics to paint a luscious tree of life on handmade paper. Colorful birds nest on the leafy branches while fish swim up the tree’s trunk and among the roots as peacocks nest under the leafy branches. Traditionally painted by women from Mithila on the walls and floor of their homes, Madhubani paintings usually depict ancient mythological themes. Bharti Dayal signs her name on the back. Born in December, 1961, I come from Samastipur in northern Bihar, a region corresponding the ancient kingdom of Mithila during in epic times. This region, bears high eminence in ancient Indian history, and preserves the rich heritage of folk paintings known as Mithila, or Madhubani paintings. As an artistically inclined girl, I learnt this art form from the elders of my family. I would watch my mother and grandmother make alpana paintings, aesthetically inspiring auspicious designs with raw wet crushed rice, on the floor of the houses, and sketch epic scenes walls. Madhubani paintings are a simplified manifestation of the philosophic underpinnings characteristic of Indian folk traditions. Ironically, the revival of this form of painting is linked to the deprivation of Darbhanga district of Bihar during the affliction of terrible drought and famine in 1967. Folk paintings on paper (transposed from the walls which were decorated in houses of Mithila) were specifically promoted to save folks from dire starvation. Today Madhubani paintings are executed with natural vegetable dyes on handmade papers, and fabric colors on cotton and silk fabrics. My post-graduate degree in botany has helped me in identifying natural sources of colors from plants. I commenced my work on professional lines in 1984. Since 1991, I have stayed and worked in New Delhi. I sought to redress a deplorable practice that had seeped into the work of Madhubani painters. Most of them, scarcely educated, only replicated earlier works, even if the original piece was stricken with egregious flaws. While remaining true to our traditional roots, I sought to induce an intellectual edge into my paintings, thus lending them a more contemporary look. Today I have several associate Madhubani artists in Bihar with whom I work in unison to create unique works of art. No time frame can be given for the completion of a painting. It can either be a whole day under the effect of inspiration, while others can linger on for months. I have been decorating the Bihar Pavilion wall during the India International Trade Fair at New Delhi for the last seven years. In March 1995, French Television made a documentary on my paintings that was subsequently shown on Discovery Channel. In 1991, I received a prestigious award from All India Fine Arts and Crafts for fifty years of art in independent India. I was selected for the 71st Annual Paintings competition of All India Fine Arts and Crafts in 1998 and for the 9th All India Fine Arts and Craft competition for traditional painting 1999. I won the state Award for Kalamkari in Mithila painting titled for the year 2000-01. My painting,’Eternal Music,’ has bagged the top award in Millennium Art competition from AIFAC for the year 2001. While I wish to cater to art-lovers with paintings on classical themes with contemporary tempering, it remains my ardent desire to win the National Award for excellence in handicrafts. I have great hopes from Novica in widening the international exposure to my art. My ardent desire is to spread cosmic harmony amongst humankind through my work. We at Novica wish to congratulate Bharti’s triumphs during the time we have known her: In 2000, when Bharti first joined Novica, she expressed a wish to win the National Award for excellence in handicrafts, also known as the President’s Award. She made her dream come true in 2007. Other accolades include the National Merit Award in 2002 and 2005; between 2003 and 2006, her work was constantly displayed at the AIFAC (All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society). Her work competed amongst 500 entries nationwide, for which 30 to 40 are selected, thus becoming a prestigious event for an artist to be included in. Also, in 2002, one of her paintings was presented to Sehba Musharraf, wife of Pakistan’s president at the time, Parvez Musharraf. In 2005, more of her paintings were selected to be displayed at the Prime Minister’s office, as well as the Finance Ministry’s office. MORE FROM THE ARTIST. LEARN MORE ABOUT NOVICA. Aafa Early Antique Folk Art Original Blue Painted Wood Pantry Box
AAFA EARLY ANTIQUE FOLK ART ORIGINAL BLUE PAINTED WOOD PANTRY BOX. Up for sale is this beautiful 19th Century Early pantry box. We love the old Early paint and great patina on this little pantry box. It’s round and has a round lid. The top has a few small pieces of wood missing on the lid as you can see in the pictures. There is also a split on the inside where the band comes together as shown in the photos – not hard to fix. There is also edge wear/paint loss around the whole pantry box where the lid sits. It should look like this if it is original! The color is a polychrome blue, more of a vibrant blue. This was a hard paint/color to get right in the pictures. It is not purple or dark blue – more vibrant. The banding is square-ended and has little round-headed nails in it as well as into the side of the pantry box at the seam. It has some age and wear, wood loss, paint loss, dents, and scratches but is still solid. It measures 10.25″ in diameter at the lid and about 5.125″ high with the lid on. It weighs about 1.5 lbs. We will do our best to answer your questions. Thank you for looking at this item. Note that the little horse is not included in this sale but is available on another sale if he’s still available.
