Saint Michael Defeating Lucifer' folk art icon, oil on metal, in curio cabinet
Saint Michael the Archangel Defeating Lucifer in Battle’. Folk art painting depiction in primary colors in oil on metal icon. Framed in door to hand-made curio cabinet. Icon 6″ x 9″; framed cabinet 19″ x 26″ x appx. Spanish Colonial work (New Mexican origin); painting appears to have been made c irca late 19th century to early 20th century; hand-crafted frame/cabinet – vintage, circa mid-20th century. Cabinet/frame: hand-worked decorative light gold-toned metal, possibly brass, covers the face of a painted hand-made wood curio/relic cabinet. The door to the cabinet serves as a frame to the icon. Done in traditional style of’tin’ work, there are multiple decorative elements along the cabinet borders. Additionally, from the top, set under the’peak’ of the cabinet, is the winged figure of Satan falling. On the sides, narrow mirrors set into the metal are angled around the opening to the cabinet; these small mirrors enhance the picture. Subject: Saint Michael defeating Lucifer in battle. In the New Testament Michael leads God’s armies against Satan’s forces in the Book of Revelation, where during the war in heaven he defeats Satan. In the Epistle of Jude Michael is specifically referred to as an “archangel”. Christian sanctuaries to Michael appeared in the 4th century, when he was first seen as a healing angel, and then over time as a protector and the leader of the army of God against the forces of evil. By the 6th century, devotions to Archangel Michael were widespread both in the Eastern and Western Churches. Over time, teachings on Michael began to vary among Christian denominations. Antique 18th century carved wood (very possibly mahogany) Santos figure, approximately 11-3/4 tall. Besides typical wear and damage from age, other notable damage is left-hand tip of thumb is chipped, and the right hand has seen damage and repair. The two raised fingers have broken off and been reattached, and the thumb has broken off and been lost to history (those are very delicate areas of the figure). Hands are separate pieces and both come out of the arms (may need a couple drops of glue to permanently attach). This baroque or rococo style figure of the late 1700s measures 13 3/8 tall on his 4 x 6 x 6 ½ pedestal and depicts a male saint holding a basket of food and raising his hand in blessing. The surface is very old (early to middle 1800s) and appears to be untouched with elaborate gilt damascene designs on the saints robe. The paint on his hand and face is chipped. Its surface is stable and there are no obvious repairs. I think the eyes may be a more recent re-paint. The item “Antique Carved Wood Saint Statue 18th c. Antique Mexican Retablo or Icon Folk Painting on Tin Saint Rita St. Of Mothers
Beautiful, moving, antique Mexican retablo, icon, or folk painting of Santa Rita de Cascia (Saint Rita of Cascia), an Italian Saint who lived in the 15th Century. Evidently, Saint Rita endured a difficult marriage that had been pressed upon her at an early age, as well as the murder of her husband in a vendetta, and the subsequent death of her two sons (who are pictured with her in the painting). She later became a nun and had mystical experiences including one in which it is said she was wounded by a thorn from Jesus Christ’s crown. According to Regis University Library, Santo Collection: Female Saints, she is a patron saint of girls in need of husbands, of marriage, of mothers, of those in bad marriages, of all who must bear suffering; for the impossible; against sickness. ” When she was canonized, she was given the title “Patroness of Impossible Causes. The painting measures about 10 inches by 14 inches. The frame measures about 12.75 inches by 16.875 inches. The condition is as shown. There are creases and dents in the metal, tiny missing areas of paint throughout, and nail holes at the top. I think the overall condition lends character to this piece. Although this is a primitive folk painting, the figures are extremely well-executed. In particular, please note the faces and hands of the figures. The overall scene is apparently typical of images of Santa Rita. According to the source quoted above, she is often depicted Wearing a nun’s habit, holding a cross and a skull occasionally with a wound on her forehead or the full stigmata. This painting includes the nun’s habit, the skull, a crucifix, a wound to her forehead, and her two sons or their spirits. Provenance: Liros Gallery, Alexandria, Virginia; a Washington, D. Private collector; and the present owners by inheritance from the collector. Thanks for your interest. ORIGINAL ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS BY THE LATE MASTER LOUISIANE ST FLEURANT B. SHE WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE FAMOUS ART MOVEMENT CALLED SAINT SOLEIL AND ALSO MOTHER OF FAMOUS ARTIST THE LATE STIVENSON MAGLOIRE. LOUISIANE PASSED AWAY IN 2005. WORK SIZE 24″ X 20″ (peinture sur toile) MORE FROM WIKIPEDIA: Louisiane Saint Fleurant (19242005) was a Haitian female artist and painter. She was a founder of the peasant Saint Soleil art movement. Saint Fleurant’s paintings often depict primitive maternal scenes of females, children, trees, wildlife, and Haitian Vodou Loas. Her folk painting style is often colorful and vibrant and expresses a distinct female perspective on the Saint Soleil movement and Haitian Vodou art. Louisiane Saint Fleurant was born on September 11, 1924, in Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, Haiti. Along with Prospere Pierre-Louis, Dieuseul Paul, Denis Smith, and Levoy Exil she formed the renowned Cinq Soleil (Five Suns) art movement. The Five Suns group formed out of the Saint Soleil movement, of which Louisiane was the only female artist. She is affectionately called the godmother of the art movement. She was not formally trained in art and began painting only in her late 40s. Louisiane was originally introduced to the Saint Soleil art community as a peasant cook and after receiving some direction from Jean-Claude Garoute, she started her practice in painting and sculpture. [1] Louisiane is the mother of five children including the renowned artist Stevenson Magloire. She painted and sculpted for 30 years until the age of 80 when poor vision precluded her ability to continue in 2002. Saint Fleurant died in her home on June 1, 2005. A second tragedy hit her family when the cemetery where she was buried was bulldozed following the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Her work has been exhibited in Asia, Europe, and the United States[3] and has recently been part of fundraising, relief, and awareness efforts following the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Louisiane Saint Fleurant’s folk paintings are well regarded by collectors for their unique manifestations of motherhood and her female perspective on Haitian and Vodou folk art.
