Original Vintage Folk Haitian Art Naif Painting Louisiane Saint Fleurant Haiti
ORIGINAL HAITIAN ART PAINTING. Original Haitian art painting for collecting and home or office decoration. Artist: Louisiane Saint Fleurant. Subject: Mother and daughters among trees and birds. Medium: Oil on Board (masonite) – dated 1989. Painting condition: Very Good – size. Folk Art Haitian Louisianne Saint Fleurant, Often called the “Godmother of Saint Soleil School of Painting”; Louisiane was born in Petit trou de Nippes in 1922. One of the five founders of “Saint Soleil”, she is also the mother of famous painters Ramphis and Stivenson Magloire. Her influence on the progress of Haitian art has been enormous. She lived in Petion Ville. There is a great demand for Louisiane’s paintings. Her work has been exhibited in many parts of the world. Saint Soleil was founded in the early 1970’s under the direction of Tiga (Jean Claude Garoute) and Maud Robart, promoters of this movement in Soisson-la-Montagne (approximately 50km from Port-au-Prince). Saint Soleil gained international recognition when Andre Malreaux visited the community in 1975. Andre Malreaux immortalized the movement by feathuring Saint Soleil in his book “L’Intemporel”. The Saint Soleil painters are heavily influenced by the voodoo religion. They paint as they are monted or possessed by the voodoo loas or spirits. Saint Soleil disbanded after only a few years, but five of the artists, Prosper Pierre Louis, Levoy Exil, Denis Smith, Dieuseul Paul and Louisianne Saint Fleurant reorganized into a group “Cinq Soleils”. Despite the painting coming from Peru, the wood retablo and decorative boarder was made in Patzcuaro Michoacan where the painting was incorporated into this nicho. Bob Brictson Collection Physical condition is excellent (8 out of 10). 1970’s rare vintage collectible, museum quality. Born in 1923, St Pierre spent most of his life working as a gardener. He was about fifty years old when he began to paint in 1972 after watching Michelle Manuel paint. Encouraged by her and his patron, Albert Mangones, St Pierre devoted most of his time to his new passion. A talented painter, he expressed his feelings through his work, painting mostly birds, flowers and voodoo spirits. He died September 25th, 1985 in kenscoff.
