A charming pair of 19c portraits painted in watercolor and housed within period rosewood frames. The sitters are Mr. Members of White Hall Place (Royal Geographical Society) in London and pencil dated on verso 1837. Each frame measures 12.50″ x 10.25″ , the watercolor measuring approx. The condition is good considering age with some fading/toning noted on the interior paper. Surface wear to the frame and the inner gilt fillet. All tolled a handsome pair of decorative portraits. These are’a pair’ in matching frames, a Winter scene and a Spring scene, oil on canvas by A. Kowalski the Hungarian artist. Framed in matching wood frames with cloth matting, both are signed by the artist but the signature on the snow scene is just below the edge of the frame. It would be more visible in another frame or if adjusted. I have had these for nearly a year and just found the second signature today. Because I thought the Snow scene was not signed I wanted to keep them together. Both are 24 wide x 20 high. See all pics for best description of condition. Fine Matched Pair Lady & Gentleman Early American Folk Art Portrait Paintings

For your consideration is this fine pair of early American folk portraits. They are in gold wood frames that measure 33 1/2 x 27 1/2 overall with the framed image measuring just over 30×24. These are original oil on canvas portraits of a lady and a gentleman that have been laid down on Masonite panel. These have been in the same family since the 1950’s when they were found in a barn in Girard, in Macoupin County, Illinois. No one is completely certain, but it is believed the restoration and conservation seen today was completed at that time. The frames and Masonite panels would match that time period. These were obviously done by one of the more proficient folk artists of the time period. It would appear these would date nearer the end of the run for the heyday of folk portraiture, say after 1830. And like most from that timeframe, appear to be unsigned. The sitters are unknown as well but advances in scholarly attribution continue to put more names with faces everyday. The images contain many pieces to the puzzle with additions like chair arms, her book and his cane all potentially helping with the case for attribution. Not to mention wardrobe, facial details and artistic technique. They certainly are the caliber of and share some similarities to the work of well known painter Ammi Phillips. That being said, they are being offered here with the sitters as well as the artist being unknown. No one is certain when, where or by whom the conservation work was completed. In the right light an area of restoration shows on the gentleman’s right shoulder. Otherwise one can assume there may have been typical amounts of random in painting associated with art from this time period. They have not been examined by a professional conservator at this point nor have they been offered for sale in the last 65 years or so. This listing and price is for both portraits. We realize these represent a significant investment and can contain many variables. Pair of framed oil on burlap paintings by JOSE MARIA de SERVIN. Wonderful images of children — each holding a doll. Hand carved wood frames. In very good condition. Framed, matted and signed. Size including frame: 26 1/2″ x 33″. Jose Maria de Servin was a distinguished member of the group Young Artists of Jalisco. He was an art professor at University of Arizona for 15 years. He is a beloved and honored artist in Mexico and his earliest exhibitions were in the 40’s. Examples of his work can be found at the Legislative Palaces of Guadalajara where he collaborated with Jose Orozco, as well as throughout Mexico City.
