Throughout most of the history of fishing lures, youll find that creating fishing lures was mostly an individual pastime. Many fishermen enjoyed making their own lures, trying to come up with new and innovative creations that would be more effective in catching fish. It wasnt until about the mid-19th century that creating fishing lures became a commercial venture. We are pleased to offer this Folk Art Handmade Paint Decorated Wooden Lobster Fishing Lure from New England circa late 1800s or early 1900s for your consideration. The fishing lure was handmade in the form of a lobster. The body of the lobster is handmade of wood and the claws are tin. Both are paint decorated. The lobsters feelers and legs are made out of heavy metal wire. There is a metal eyelet on the top of the lobster that would have been used to attach to a fishing line and can be used today for display hanging. This is an outstanding piece of early New England nautical folk art. Jere nautical themed folk art piece. The whale is made of a heavy solid metal or lead. The board looks to be hand painted. Really a different style piece from the typical C. Jere works I’ve seen. Measurements 20″ tall x 14 1/8″ wide. It has a few small dings in the corners and some lighter wear from age. The green spacers were added to keep the whale from hitting the wood. Vintage folk art oil painting nautical seascape Oregon artist Robert Whitsell

Vintage oil painting by Oregon artist Robert Whitsell. This charming folk art-inspired seascape shows a scene from Pacific Northwest nautical history, the schooner Nena-Mosha anchored in Siletz Bay on the Oregon coast in 1912. The painting itself is most likely from the 1960s-1970s. This is presented in its original wooden frame, which is quite handsome, professionally prepared, and complements the painting very well. On the back of the canvas is a label describing the historical significance of the scene. The frame measures 19″ x 23″, and the canvas measures 16″ x 20″. What little I know about the artist is through a brief conversation with his granddaughter. He was a very prolific painter of landscapes and genre scenes inspired by Pacific Northwest history. He might have had some gallery representation in Salem, Oregon. Condition: The canvas has some tiny rough spots in an isolated area – it’s either abrasion or just inconsistency in the paint application. I can find no other problems with the painting itself.
