This is a very cute naive oil on canvas painting of a late summer New England landscape with a small lake which has a sailboat sailing on it – it appears that the artist’s viewpoint was from the front of a cove that opens out into the main body of the lake – the artist painted some old logs & some stones at the shoreline of the cove in order to give the viewer some perspective in contrast to the main part of the painting – the cove’s surface is very still & calm & was painted with a palette of muted gray-blue & off-white colors – on the left & in the right center of the painting, there are shadows of trees & foliage on the water’s surface that were nicely done by the unknown artist using a palette of muted shades of green. Entering the cove is a sailboat with its hull painted in brown with a single mast & sail painted in muted beige & off-white colors – beyond the sailboat, we see many more trees & foliage in the distance on the far shoreline where the artist used muted shades of yellow & green color in a more impressionistic style to create a sense of space & distance – the sky above the distant trees & foliage was painted a pale blue with lots of puffy clouds floating throughout the sky – the clouds were painted in muted gray & off-white colors – overall, considering this is a naive type of oil painting, the artist did a very nice job in creating this lovely rustic painting which would look great hanging on the wall of somebody’s rustic cabin in the woods or near a lake.

Original antique painting of a seaside landscape in New England. Oil on stretched canvas, 8″ x 16″ A small group of houses clustered on a shoreline under an overcast sky. A rocky outcrop in the foreground, a pair of small rowboats moored in the cove, several sailing boats on the ocean horizon, seabirds flying over the water. The skill level of the painting is on the level of folk art ; an attractive scene, evocative of simple country life on the coast of southern New England in the 19th century. Unsigned and undated, however this was clearly painted in the late 1800s. Exact location of this scene is unknown; probably the shoreline of either Rhode Island or Massachusetts, circa 1880s-1890s. The wooden stretcher is stamped with the patent date Oct. Artists’ Supplies and Stationary Regilding a Speciality 411 Broadway, Chelsea Massachusetts ———– The painting is in as-found condition, with surface scuffs and some paint loss. There are three holes through the canvas in the painted sky. The canvas is still securely nailed to the stretcher, as it has been for around 130+ years. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”. Condition is good and clean on front for the age, with slight wear in some small places on edges, MODERATE bowing. Paintings is NOT warped, but is SERIOUSLY BOWED. I cannot say whether a frame shall or shall not straighten out the painting, if simply place in one. A professional framer can straighten out this painting in a frame, if you so choose. Overall size is 16 inches by 20 inches. Artist is Ann Cusick of Rhode Island. Provenance of the scene is this is Cumberland, Rhode Island. I also wrote provenance on back. Cumberland Rhode Island was settled originally as part of Rehoboth, MA. The property was eventually transferred to Rhode Island and named in honor of Prince William, Duke of Cumberland. Here is a beautiful folk art winter scene. Looks like New England scene rolling hills church with Steeple man walking with his dog! What more can you ask for? Has a close look to Grand Ma Moses. In my eyes its appears to be a watercolor but I’m not a expert in art and or paints. The piece is very large measures about 33 1/2″ X 25 1/2″. The signature reads Ortel Ontel or Omtel not sure and its not dated. Based on the framer’s label on the back its early 1960’s and or earlier. Its in very good condition the large Christmas trees in the front the paint is thick and shows some crackling see last photo. But real a good looking winter scene.
