Osterville 4th Of July Parade. Original, Folk Art Painting. This piece was recently exhibited at the 4th Osterville Village Library Annual Plein Air Show on Cape Cod. Original Cape Cod Folkart painting. Charming piece with kids, clowns, horses, dogs, fire engines. All residents and visitors love this annual treat each July in the lovely Mid Cape Village. A summer favorite for children. The painting features the popular old storefronts which makes the village a special place. Created by listed Cape Cod and Wellesley artist inspired by the Cahoon/Mumford Cape folk art tradition. Artist Biography from the Archives of askART. Savage, MD, was born in 1951 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. His father, Peter, was a family physician in the anthracite coal mining area. Peter, and his wife, Olga, had five sons, four of whom became physicians. As a boy, Robert enjoyed sports and sketching cartoons and political caricatures. After graduating as President of his high school class, Robert attended Wesleyan University. There he first fell in love with art history from the teachings of legendary professor, Samuel M. Green, the nationally respected etcher, watercolorist and author of American Art: A Historical Survey. Upon graduation, Robert followed his genetic defect entering Jefferson Medical College. During that period, he continued his life time love of art as a collector and researcher. The Savages personal art collection is comprised mostly of New England, impressionistic and realist artists from the early 20th century, primarily from Cape Ann and Cape Cod. This collection was published in the American Fine Art Magazine, and was discussed at the Boston International Fine Arts Exhibition. Upon retirement from medicine in 2016, Robert Savage started a new career as a local art historian curating two Facebook blogs, The Wellesley Collection Art Review and Friends of the Rockport Art Association and Museum. Writing with an emphasis on reviving the reputations of fabulous women artists from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, he is a frequent contributor to the Wellesley Weston Magazine. He lectures on similar topics in Wellesley, Boston and Cape Cod. Most recently, during the Covid pandemic winter, being entirely self-trained, he began to paint in oils and acrylics. His work concentrates on iconic images of Cape Cod and the Islands. Many of his works are in a folk art style inspired by the Cape tradition of the Cahoons and Elizabeth Mumford. He also admires the soulful work of Anne Packard and Blanche Lazzell of Provincetown in addition to the Edward Hopper Truro paintings. He enjoys the challenges of mixing geometric shape and color experimentation. His work has been presented at curated exhibitions at the Rockport Art Association and Museum’s Emerging Artists show in 2021 and 2022, and the annual 3rd and 4th Osterville Library Plein-Air Exhibition. He is an exhibiting member and board member of the Wellesley Society of Artists. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”. Up for sale here is an original, one of a kind gouache and watercolor painting by well collected contemporary Polish painter and illustrator Jozef Wilkon (born 1930). This fine painting dates most likely from between 1973 and 1974 but it could be earlier. The artist’s title for this work is “Girl in Flower Garden, Night”. The painting only measures 6 1/2 inches high by. 4 3/8 inches across. The total size with the frame comes to 15 inches by 12 1/2 inches. The painting is signed by the artist in the bottom center of the painting. This painting was also exhibited at the very popular Chicago area Museum, The Polish Museum of America, on April 4, 1976 and still retains the exhibition label on the back. The work was framed in the Chicago area at Schwartz Picture Frame Co in 1974 and has a framer’s label on the back as well. The painting is in very good condition with bright colors and no cracking or flaking to the paint. The backing paper has tears but we didn’t want to remove it since the labels were on there and the piece is still sealed quite well. Jozef Wilkon has illustrated many books over his lifetime and he is quite a prolific artist but not a whole lot of his original paintings are floating around out there. We will not alter the value of an item for export purposes. The item “OLD Polish Listed Artist Fine Folk Art PAINTING Artwork EXHIBITED at a MUSEUM $$” is in sale since Tuesday, August 13, 2019.
