Tota Pulchra Immaculate Conception Oil on Wood Panel Folk Art Painting
Tota Pulchra Immaculate Conception Oil on Wood Panel Folk Art Painting. Striking hand-painted devotional image of the Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception, presented in the traditional “Tota Pulchra” iconography and rendered in a Latin American/Spanish Colonial folk style. Mary appears crowned, wearing a white gown and dark blue-green mantle, with her hands joined in prayer. She is surrounded by symbolic Marian imagery, including a church or temple, palm, moon with a human face, well or fountain, flowers, tower, star or sunburst, and garden elements. These emblems traditionally refer to the Virgin’s purity and appear in historical representations of the Immaculate Conception. Medium: Oil or oil-type paint on a single wooden panel Approximate dimensions: 20 3/4 inches high × 16 7/8 inches wide Frame: None Signature: No visible signature Origin: Unknown; Latin American or Spanish Colonial style, possibly Mexican Date: Exact age unknown. The painting is in visibly aged, unrestored-looking condition. The wooden panel is bowed/curved and has irregular, worn edges. There are scattered paint losses, flaking, abrasions, scratches, surface dirt, small holes, edge chips, and areas of heavier loss, particularly near the upper-right corner and around the perimeter. An opening appears above the crown, and the reverse retains old cord hanging hardware. The reverse is dark, rough, and heavily textured. No conservation examination, cleaning, ultraviolet inspection, or laboratory analysis has been performed. Please examine every photograph carefully, as the images form an important part of the condition description. The painting is offered as found and as shown. Country of origin and date have not been independently authenticated, and no attribution to a particular artist is intended. A visually compelling piece of religious folk art for collectors of Marian imagery, Latin American devotional painting, Spanish Colonial-style art, santos, retablos, and antique religious objects.

This appears to be a true hand-painted piece, featuring translucent watercolor or ink washes layered directly onto unprimed paperboard. The close-up details showcase a beautiful, distinctive feature where the original pigment has bled naturally over the decades into the raw fibers of the backing board. The subject sports a classic mid-19th-century chinstrap beard, high white collar, black waistcoat, and matching dark coat, set against an artist backdrop featuring foliage on one side and a formal interior on the other. Measures 9″ long x 7″ wide. A wonderful addition to any Americana, folk art, or historic portrait collection! CONDITION : This piece is an authentic antique and shows significant signs of age and wear.
