A summer favorite for children. The painting features the popular old storefronts which makes the village a special place. Created by listed Cape Cod and Wellesley artist inspired by the Cahoon/Mumford Cape folk art tradition. Artist Biography from the Archives of askART. Savage, MD, was born in 1951 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. His father, Peter, was a family physician in the anthracite coal mining area. Peter, and his wife, Olga, had five sons, four of whom became physicians. As a boy, Robert enjoyed sports and sketching cartoons and political caricatures. After graduating as President of his high school class, Robert attended Wesleyan University. There he first fell in love with art history from the teachings of legendary professor, Samuel M. Green, the nationally respected etcher, watercolorist and author of American Art: A Historical Survey. Upon graduation, Robert followed his genetic defect entering Jefferson Medical College. During that period, he continued his life time love of art as a collector and researcher. The Savages personal art collection is comprised mostly of New England, impressionistic and realist artists from the early 20th century, primarily from Cape Ann and Cape Cod. This collection was published in the American Fine Art Magazine, and was discussed at the Boston International Fine Arts Exhibition. Upon retirement from medicine in 2016, Robert Savage started a new career as a local art historian curating two Facebook blogs, The Wellesley Collection Art Review and Friends of the Rockport Art Association and Museum. Writing with an emphasis on reviving the reputations of fabulous women artists from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, he is a frequent contributor to the Wellesley Weston Magazine. He lectures on similar topics in Wellesley, Boston and Cape Cod. Most recently, during the Covid pandemic winter, being entirely self-trained, he began to paint in oils and acrylics. His work concentrates on iconic images of Cape Cod and the Islands. Many of his works are in a folk art style inspired by the Cape tradition of the Cahoons and Elizabeth Mumford. He also admires the soulful work of Anne Packard and Blanche Lazzell of Provincetown in addition to the Edward Hopper Truro paintings. He enjoys the challenges of mixing geometric shape and color experimentation. His work has been presented at curated exhibitions at the Rockport Art Association and Museum’s Emerging Artists show in 2021 and 2022, and the annual 3rd and 4th Osterville Library Plein-Air Exhibition. He is an exhibiting member and board member of the Wellesley Society of Artists. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”.
