It is painted in the primitive style of an untrained artist with the buildings and trees reduced to an almost pictographic representation. Surrounding the schoolhouse are a number of traditional clapboard houses as well as a large barn-like structure with trees in the background. He always worked in the primitive or naïf style, always painting scenes of New England in a simpler time.
