Vintage Painted Figural Wooden Corn Folk Art Sign Roadside Stand Americana

What a fun sign, painted solid wood with an old worn surface. The one side that faced the weather is more faded than the other, as would be expected. The shape is great as is the detail of the painted surface. I think next to Pennsylvania, New Jersey might have the most roadside stands and markets. And Jersey corn is almost as good as PA’s. Uh oh, gonna get some comments. A great piece of Americana and folk art. The sign is 45″ long x 12″ high x 3/4 thick and has two iron loops to hang it by. Got this from a guy from New Jersey in a field, how appropriate. Like us on face book. Early 19th Century American School Folk Art Portrait Oil On Board Naive

This wonderful American folk art half portrait of a lady dates to the early 19th century, circa 1830. The sitter is wearing traditional circa 1830 dress; we particularly like the pink, white and red neck ribbon. Early American folk artists would often use the same props in their paintings; in this painting the lady is sat on a dark wood chair with red cushioning and with one arm crossed horizontally. Beside her is a side table with a small porcelain globular vase filled with flowers. The painting is unsigned and housed in its attractive unglazed original frame. We have not opened this painting. Measuring: Frame 9 1/8 (23 cm) by 11 2/8 (28.5 cm). Aperture 5.5 (14 cm) by 7.75 (19.5 cm). Condition: This original oil painting is in good condition for its vast age with some evidence of old restoration. There is a small surface graze at the top of the sitters head. Next to this graze is a thumb size area of old restoration. There are a couple of minor surface scratches to the table cloth area. Above the table is an area of diagonal darkening to the painted surface. There is a small approximately 0.5 crack to the top layer of the board in the bottom right corner, this we believe is an area of previous restoration to her hand. The bottom edge of the gilt slip has a shallow 2 surface chip which has at some point in the past been touched up in gold. The rosewood veneer frame is in good, sound condition. 19th C Folk Art classic, 19th C hand carved figural cane, original paint

Here is an American folk art classic… A 19th century 36 3/4 cane / walking stick with a hand carved waist high figure of a man bearing its original paint throughout… I note that in addition to the paint on the man, the shaft of the cane itself bears its original flame grain red wash. If there is an apology to be found anywhere is simply the two dings to the backside of the shaft as shown in my last picture. Clementine Hunter Signed Folk Art Painting of Figures in Landscape. This charming painting in Oil on canvas board was painted by the important Louisiana Folk Artist Clementine Hunter. It has several figures that appear in other subjects by Hunter, including at lower left an adult seated in a chair reaching toward a child, the floating figures in the center that resemble those found in her paintings Saturday Night at the Honky Tonk, and a large standing figure of a woman at right. Pencil underdrawing can be seen in several areas of the painting. Hunter’s signature monogram is at lower center right (see photo 8; monogram is a backwards “C” over “H” in dark brown paint). The painting measures approximately. There is a slight warp to the canvas board but with proper framing this would be addressed. Other than this, the painting is in very good condition. Clementine Hunter to current Owner. Hunter was born in December. Near Natchitoches, Louisiana, on Hidden Hill Plantation (later known as Little Eva Plantation). When she was young, her father moved the family away from the harsh environment of Hidden Hill (the plantation that was allegedly the basis for Harriet Beecher Stowes Uncle Toms Cabin) to the more hospitable Melrose Plantation. She lived there most of her life, moving down the road only a few years before her death at. She made her first painting at age. Encouraged by writer and Melrose resident Francoise Mignon. She used canvas when available, or utilitarian surfaces such as cardboard, window shades, bottles, and brown paper bags. Although illiterate, her paintings are based on her observations of life in and around Melrose. Hunter, an African-American woman, is considered one of the most important American folk artists, and her work can be found in collections including the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Folk Art in New York City, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the High Museum in Atlanta, and numerous private collections.
