The framed image illustrates how it should be floated in a frame with a mat backing exposing all edges of the art. Original Art By Listed (Askart) Georgia Artist Steven Chandler. Signed: Chandler’18, also signed/ titled on back. Medium: Artist paint, Original Permanent Homemade Georgia Red Mud Paint on matboard. Size: 9 x 12 inches (roughly). Provenance: Painting will include an artist personalized receipt. I did this one this past summer, it was hot. I used my Dad’s old. 357 six shooter as a model for this one. I also like Jewish Folk Art, Russian , Mexican and well Folk Art made by many ethnicity’s and cultures. My figures are generally race free though, just because they might be dark, doesn’t mean anything to me other than a shade of light, shady figures, race-free.. I think there is a big difference between a racist conversation and a racial conversation. People used to message me before I started posting photos of myself, wondering what color I was. They never asked outright, but they beat around the bush, ridiculous.. One time somebody asked me if I was the “Real Steven Chandler” I told them I sure hope so, I’m wearing his underwear. To many, it seemed who I was, was more important than the image they were interested in. I have found over the years that many look at the artist before they look at the art. Do they look at the chef, before they eat the food? The author before reading the book? The director before the movie? I started catching snakes around six or seven years old. I read every book I could on them. I wanted to be a herpetologist. Sometime back then I went deaf for a while and drew pictures obsessively, nobody knew I was nearly deaf, they thought I was just not listening. Also back then if you drew obsessively, there must have been something wrong with you, so I couldn’t even be an artist, I had to get tested for autism and everything else. Because I couldn’t hear, I fell behind in math and other studies that you need to go into herpetology. Again, though, nobody knew I was nearly deaf, so I got yelled at for not listening and drawing all the time and running around chasing after rattlesnakes. Now days I would have been hailed as some child prodigy or something, but no, not in the 1970’s, back then you were just crazy. So I grew up making art and catching snakes. I went on to go to college and earned a degree in art. They told me in college I was primitive and could not teach me much, I already was there. So I get a degree, but was to primal for the hoity toity contemporary art world and too educated for the self-taught folk outsider whatever world-I just couldn’t win… The hell with them all, I made my own damn art world. This is my last painting of 2018. There is roughly 4000 of my works out there in the world now. I live in rural Georgia. Georgia Red Mud Painter Blog. Clementine Hunter Signed Folk Art Painting of Figures in Landscape. This charming painting in Oil on canvas board was painted by the important Louisiana Folk Artist Clementine Hunter. It has several figures that appear in other subjects by Hunter, including at lower left an adult seated in a chair reaching toward a child, the floating figures in the center that resemble those found in her paintings Saturday Night at the Honky Tonk, and a large standing figure of a woman at right. Pencil underdrawing can be seen in several areas of the painting. Hunter’s signature monogram is at lower center right (see photo 8; monogram is a backwards “C” over “H” in dark brown paint). The painting measures approximately. There is a slight warp to the canvas board but with proper framing this would be addressed. Other than this, the painting is in very good condition. Clementine Hunter to current Owner. Hunter was born in December. Near Natchitoches, Louisiana, on Hidden Hill Plantation (later known as Little Eva Plantation). When she was young, her father moved the family away from the harsh environment of Hidden Hill (the plantation that was allegedly the basis for Harriet Beecher Stowes Uncle Toms Cabin) to the more hospitable Melrose Plantation. She lived there most of her life, moving down the road only a few years before her death at. She made her first painting at age. Encouraged by writer and Melrose resident Francoise Mignon. She used canvas when available, or utilitarian surfaces such as cardboard, window shades, bottles, and brown paper bags. Although illiterate, her paintings are based on her observations of life in and around Melrose. Hunter, an African-American woman, is considered one of the most important American folk artists, and her work can be found in collections including the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Folk Art in New York City, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the High Museum in Atlanta, and numerous private collections. Biography from New Jersey Gallery. Antonio Romano was born in Italy in 1953. His teachers in Italy included Luigi Fali, a student of Pietra Annagoni (portrait painter of Queen Elizabeth). He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and worked under James Moriarty. Romano has developed a distinctive style combining modernism and folk art, which he calls “e-scribble”. It is a style with elements of surrealism and one he developed within the last few years, well after first visiting the USA in 1966 with several trips every other year or so back to Italy before remaining here. E-scribble derived from childhood memories and symbols from Central Italy. The inspiration came from the exposure to design features of wool tapestries made on family looms, which wove their influence into his’mindscape’ as an almost metaphysical, melancholy backdrop to his art. The influence of Giorgio De Chirico, the Italian Futurists , and Paul Delvaux and Rene Magritte is acknowledged, but Romano has assimilated their influence and gone his own way with the goal of creating provocative paintings carefully and skillfully conceived, designed and executed. One of his paintings, entitled Tesla , for the great scientist and electrical engineer, demonstrates elements of a prototypical Antonio Romano painting— balance and subject matter of timelessness. For some viewers, it is difficult to determine if a work was done a week ago or one-hundred years ago. Romano often uses found/used material on which to paint, using old paper or cardboard as part of the history of the painting. His frames are often used and old, and he considers them to be an integral part of the artwork. He often writes a few words, a saying of his own, poetry if you will, to add to the painting’s meaning and/or mystery. The delicate looping e is a design backdrop intended to add dimension and a temporal and enigmatic quality. There are objects that may be interpreted in different ways, and the viewer, of course, ultimately decides on their meanings and the satisfaction derived from viewing the artwork. Romano has taught fresco painting, and one of his fresco panels was bought by art dealer, Leo Castelli. The New Yorker magazine in 1989 featured him and his fresco work in an article. The artist Albert Pels was a friend and collector of his work. He has done frescoes for the St Mary’s Cathedral in Albany and Our Lady of Pompeii in Greenwich Village. Keywords and Quick Facts for.
