Condition is good with some yellowing to the outer varnish. Of the artist board shows some water staining and slight warping. There is some wear to the old wooden frame.

New York State Winter Farmhouse Folk Art Oil Painting

This is a very cute vintage Folk Art oil painting depicting an antique saltbox yellow farmhouse with a prominent weathered red barn located beside it – according to what is written on the reverse of the painting, the farmhouse is located in the Carthage, New York area – the painting was done by Folk Art artist Sanny Backus of Carthage who titled the painting “Winter Barn” – on the reverse, the artist stated that this painting was done in oil & acrylic paints, but, the look & feel of the painting in my estimation is predominantly oil paint – the painting is not dated, but, appears to be from the 1970’s? The subject of the painting which is the red barn at the center of the picture is shown with a mid-winter heavy coat of snow on its sloping front side where it appears to attach to another smaller outbuilding – there are heavy drifts of snow on the ground all around the barn & the saltbox colonial as well as on the roof of the farmhouse – both buildings were painted to depict them as quite weathered from the many winter seasons & storms that they have survived through – the artist used a palette of pale red & brown to depict the barn & a gray- black for the barn’s roof – for the saltbox colonial, the artist used a palette of pale brown & beige for the front side, & pale gray with a tint of yellow for the south side of the house, all to reflect extreme weathering of the south side of the house due to heavy winds & storms. Behind the farmhouse & barn are some smallish mountains painted in a pleasant variety of blue, green, brown, & gray colors which seem to show less snow buildup than on the flatter terrain by the farmhouse – probably the snow is there but hard to see through the dense foliage created by the artist – the painting measures 12″ x 16″ sight size, & is in very good vintage condition – it is well-enhanced by its original painted wooden frame where the blue-green color of the outer border of the frame matches the blue-green colors of the small mountains – the frame also has an inner border painted gray-black which matches nicely with the grays & blacks of the painting the fence, the trees, the base of the barn, & the various shadows found around the house & the barn as well as the mountains.

This is a very cute Folk Art / naive antique oil on canvas painting depicting a rural winter scene where we see a two-horse sleigh coming along a snow strewn dirt road towards the viewer – in the sleigh are a man & a woman all wrapped up in their cold weather clothing where behind them, the viewer sees a pinkish sunset contrasted against a pale blue sky with off-white fluffy clouds floating through the sky – the colorful sky contrasts with the low mid-section of the painting where the viewer sees a dark & deep forest. To the right of the sleigh is a small cape type house with smoke flowing from its solitary chimney – it appears to be early winter as most of the trees are without any leaves but for some fir trees that are behind the house – the snow, however, is not deep with grass poking through the snow on the left side of the road, & tree stumps showing clearly on the field across the road from the house – the two birch trees on the right suggest some strong wind in the past have sheared off their tops. The painting measures 17″ x 22″ sight size, & is in very good antique condition – it’s enhanced by its probable original antique walnut frame which measures 19″ x 24″ & is in good antique condition – the painting was professionally cleaned to rid it of its 125+ years of grit & smoke residue which had accumulated (there is no smoke smell) & made the old varnish brown – now, we can see the original colors as the artist intended – the painting was also re-varnished to preserve its surface for another century.

KATHI STINGLE PA. FOLK ART CLOTH SHEEP With HANDPAINTED WINTER TREES SNOW SCENE 8

This wonderful black-faced sheep, made of canvas or a similar fabric, is the work of Pennsylvania folk artist Kathi Stingle, who tagged it on the bottom with a gold name sticker. Beneath the sheep (between its legs), the artist has painted nighttime snow scenes showing snow-covered evergreens against rolling hills. The full moon appears on one side. The sheep, depicted with piercing brown eyes, measures approximately 8 by 7 inches and is just a couple of inches wide. It’s in good vintage condition. We see a bit of rubbing of the fabric at the nose and a couple of light hairline cracks in the finish of the snow scene painting on one side.
