Incredible Antique African American Black Folk Art Slave Oil Painting WOW
This is an Incredible and museum worthy Antique African American Black Folk Art Oil Painting on wood board, depicting a sullen field slave sitting inside of a barn, with an overseer or well dressed house slave appearing to chastise him. The central figure has an anguished expression, and his back appears to be bloodied from the lashes of a whip. His white cotton shirt is hanging behind him and is also stained with blood. In the lower right corner of the scene, two nestled hens peek their heads out from a pile of straw. I have been collecting African American Folk Art for a very long time, and have Never In My Life came across an artwork with such raw historical value and subject matter. This belongs in a museum, and would be the paramount piece of any serious Black Folk Art collection. Signed and dated: H. Nickels’36 in the lower right corner. I could not find any information on this artist, but perhaps you know more about him or his work. The creation date of 1936 puts this piece firmly in the early Jim Crow era, and may have been painted by someone who witnessed this scene or was personally familiar with this sort of sad situation. The historical importance of this painting cannot be understated. Approximately 29 1/8 x 37 1/8 inches including frame. Actual artwork is approximately 24 x 32 inches. Good condition for age, with minor paint loss in some areas, and light scuffing and edge wear to the original period frame please see photos.
