Andrzej Galek COSSACK AND BEAR Polish Reverse Glass Folk Art Painting 1960s. Mid Century painting on glass by artist Andrzej Galek depicting folklore from Poland Old Region of Tatra Mountains, a Cossack man killing a bear threatening a woman and her flock of sheep. Galek, at lower bottom left of painting. Wood framed entire piece measures 11″high x 12 7/8″wide. Very good condition, frame shows wear. Andrzej Galek, was a Polish artist and architect, sometimes known as Andrew Knob. Antique Folk Art Painting Native American Subject Bear Hunting. Oil on canvas Painting measures 27 1/4″ x 21″ As framed 32″ x 25 1/2″ Signed “Siebke”. This painting is beautiful, and projects the action and intensity of the scene very well. It shows a Native American astride his rearing horse as he draws his bow to defend against an attacking bear. Interestingly, it appears that only three or four colors where used when painting this. Despite the toned down color scheme, the artist has managed to portray the time of day as being dawn or twilight. The style of the painting reminds me of the covers of old Western pulp novels. I would feel pretty confident dating this as pre-1930. There is a small very hard to notice tear in the canvas measuring about 1/2 This would be a pretty easy repair for someone who knows what they are doing. When viewed from the front, it is difficult to notice unless you are looking for it.
