I absolutely love this antique, hand painted wedding chest! The trunk is probably made of solid pine wood, has two hinges and two iron handles. It has been painted in a deep and dark forest green color. This wedding chest is still solid and sturdy, but in timeworn condition; there are old woodworm holes, traces of chipped and flaky paint, scuffs, scratches, paint loss, cracks, dings and dents. On the front left side corner, there is a small piece of wood missing and the top of the chest has a large crack. A part of the original lock is still in place. This marriage chest is full of character and measures 33.1″ long x 15″ wide x 13 tall (84 cm x 38 cm x 33 cm). Antique French Dowry Chest Hand Painted Wedding Chest Folk Art Wedding Trunk

This is an antique French wedding chest, made of pinewood. This wedding trunk dates from the 19th century and is hand painted on all sides in a soft, spring green color (except for the back of the trunk, which has been repainted in the past, since it has a darker green color). The top of this French dowry chest features two painted floral wreaths with two initials in it (L & H) and the front and both short sides feature colorful, hand painted flower bouquets and floral designs. The bridal chest is in pretty good condition with wear, consistent with age and use; the originial lock is missing, the top of the chest has two large cracks and a chunk of wood missing, the paint has faded in some places, the bottom is a bit loose and there are traces of paint loss, splits, cracks, scuffs, chips, scratches, old woodworm holes (which have been treated) and general wear. It measures 24″ long x 12.2″ wide x 10.4 tall (61 cm x 31 cm x 26.5 cm). Oil on panel Size without frame : 9.5″ x 13.5″ Size including frame : 14.5″ x 17.0″. A colourful folk scene of children dragging a hand-cart full of (fire) wood as a group of resting hunters look on. Most probably rural France; a very well painted, and typical, example of the work of Maröhn. On a lovely chamfered teak panel – often the sign of a very good artist. Very clearly signed in bottom Right Hand corner. Ready to hang straight on the wall where it is at the moment in my study, and has been for a number of years! Ferdinand Maröhn (also called Maronnio) was born in Germany, lived in France and painted mostly in a Dutch style. His biographical data are only partially known but. He exhibited many times at the Berlin Academy and, from 1846 to 1859, in several Parisian Salons. Maröhn was a prolific artist whose works have been included in the collections of some French museums (Reims and Ajaccio). Ian Emmerson Paintings was established in 1975 and was incorporated in 1997. We have always specialized in 19. Century British and European fine art and, being based in Northumberland, in artists/paintings of the North East of England/Newcastle. This offering is for a wonderful Folk Art Bird Cage, possibly French. The cage is made of wood and wire and it retains its original blue green paint. The condition of both the cage and the paint surface are very good with some paint chipping and no obvious damage. It can be used for holding birds as intended or for décor. It has two tight wire doors, a wire swing at the top and an opening for a tray at the bottom. It is shown from all sides. The color has a little more green to it than shows up on my monitor.
