19th Century Mexican Oil on Tin Retablo of Saint Rita of Cascia. A beautiful 19th-century Mexican devotional retablo depicting Saint Rita of Cascia, one of the most beloved saints of the Catholic faith and patron saint of impossible causes. Painted in oil on a hand-cut sheet of tin, the composition portrays Saint Rita wearing her Augustinian habit with a radiant gilt halo, holding a crucifix while gesturing toward her heart. Her forehead bears the traditional stigmata associated with her devotion to Christ. The deep green background is framed by stylized gilt clouds, creating a striking yet humble folk-art composition characteristic of Mexican devotional paintings of the 19th century. This piece retains its early hanging ribbon threaded through the original suspension hole. The painting displays the honest wear expected of an authentic devotional object that has been cherished for generations. Areas of paint loss, oxidation, edge wear, scattered rust, and a beautifully aged surface contribute to its character and authenticity. Whether displayed in a religious collection, Spanish Colonial interior, or curated gallery wall, this retablo offers remarkable presence and historical charm. Approximately 14 inches tall. Approximately 10 inches wide. Good antique condition for its age. Surface exhibits age-related paint loss, craquelure, oxidation, edge wear, scattered rust, and minor bends to the hand-cut tin. The reverse shows expected oxidation and age. Original hanging ribbon remains. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are part of the description.
