Get Vendio Gallery – Now FREE! This gorgeous picture is a paper yawning baby dressed in a real satin gown with Bakelite buttons, and a cream crochet blanket. The blanket has blue silk trim attached with a blanket stitch, and little blue silk rosettes. The picture is under glass, in a wood frame. The little buttons have caused a slight bit of discoloration to the blue satin, and the picture has faded a bit over time, while the wood of the frame has darkened. It is a gorgeous piece of folk art, The paper back is worn, and started to come loose. There is a bit of blanket showing through on the edges. The picture is large, measuring 12 1/2″ by 16 3/4″. There is gorgeous lace with pink rose and silver trim. There is a green patterned fabric background made to look like the back of the layette or crib. The baby has beautiful pink and blue silk rosette trim in her hair. There is a silk bow at each corner, tied with a silver cord. The silver cord and trim have darkened over time. The picture is overall slightly faded, and the baby has a very slight green tinge. Photos in this time weren’t color photos, but sepia that were hand colored. The hands are slightly curved over the blanket, to give added realism. It is under glass, in a wood frame that has a slight green border. The wood frame has darkened with age. The picture is a folk art style that was very popular in the Victorian era, through the 1930’s. The backing is brown paper. It is large, measuring 15″ by 19″. A charming antique Oil Painting depicting a Rabbit & her baby Bunnies. The painting is executed on canvas and is in the original gilt frame. It is well done yet naive, the colors are perspective are wonderful. The painting is not signed that I can find. Overall dimensions are 14 3/4″ wide x 221/2″ high including the frame. The Oil Painting is in very good overall condition. The frame has losses to the side edges around the perimeter, see photo. The painting would be perfect in a country, primitive or folk art decor, it is very sweet. Moses Tolliver (1918 to 2006) who painted under the name Mose T, with a backward s, is considered one of the founding figures of what became known as Outsider Art. He grew up in rural Alabama and taught himself to paint, because he didnt learn to read until later in life. He crushed his foot while working in a warehouse, and began to paint for a living even before he was discovered by art critics and galleries. He usually painted in house paint on plywood or discarded boards, whimsical and sometimes erotic pictures of animals, humans, and flora, watermelons and birds. His work has been displayed at the White House, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and many other museums and galleries. Antique Early 19th C Signed Edward Hicks Mother And Baby Folk Art Oil Painting

This is an antique early 19th century mother and baby oil painting by the wonderful Folk Art painter Edward Hicks. It is signed on the back in the bottom right corner. It measures 13 inches wide by 15 1/2 inches high (33 cm x 39.4 cm). I found the following information online, though there are many other articles about him available. Edward Hicks was born in 1780 in Pennsylvania. His mother died when he was 18 months old, and his father, a British loyalist, was forced to flee in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War. Family friends took in the abandoned child and gave him religious instruction; from this early time, religion became central to his life. At age thirteen Hicks was apprenticed to a coach maker and spent the next seven years learning to make and paint coaches. Hicks was miserable in the rough company of the coachmen and to resolve this unhappy situation, he joined the Society of Friends in 1803, finding among the Quakers a spiritual home. Hicks was soon recognized as a minister and, like other Quakers, began to travel thousands of miles to spread the word, uncompensated in any material way. Eventually he established himself in Milford, Pennsylvania, where he painted coaches and signs and decorated household objects. A conflict arose, however, between his desire for artistic expression and his need to meet Quaker demands for simplicity in all aspects of life. By 1820 he had begun easel painting, and scenes based on the biblically inspired theme of “the peaceable kingdom” became his specialty. Hicks continued to travel and preach and to paint until his death in 1849. Based on this information, this painting was probably done by him sometime between the 1820s and 1840s. Given its age, it has a lot of crackling to the paint finish. There is also some loss of paint, most notably around the left side edges and scattered about. Please use the photos as your guide.
