Antique Painted French Wedding Chest Swedish Folk Art Dowry Chest Hope Chest
I absolutely love this antique, hand painted wedding chest! The trunk is probably made of solid pine wood, has two hinges and two iron handles. It has been painted in a deep and dark forest green color. This wedding chest is still solid and sturdy, but in timeworn condition; there are old woodworm holes, traces of chipped and flaky paint, scuffs, scratches, paint loss, cracks, dings and dents. On the front left side corner, there is a small piece of wood missing and the top of the chest has a large crack. A part of the original lock is still in place. This marriage chest is full of character and measures 33.1″ long x 15″ wide x 13 tall (84 cm x 38 cm x 33 cm). The item “Antique Painted French Wedding Chest Swedish Folk Art Dowry Chest Hope Chest” is in sale since Thursday, May 2, 2019. This item is in the category “Antiques\Antique Furniture\Boxes/Chests\Victorian (1837-1901)”. The seller is “rootsofraw” and is located in Voerendaal. This item can be shipped worldwide.

Antique French Dowry Chest Hand Painted Wedding Chest Folk Art Wedding Trunk
This is an antique French wedding chest, made of pinewood. This wedding trunk dates from the 19th century and is hand painted on all sides in a soft, spring green color (except for the back of the trunk, which has been repainted in the past, since it has a darker green color). The top of this French dowry chest features two painted floral wreaths with two initials in it (L & H) and the front and both short sides feature colorful, hand painted flower bouquets and floral designs. The bridal chest is in pretty good condition with wear, consistent with age and use; the originial lock is missing, the top of the chest has two large cracks and a chunk of wood missing, the paint has faded in some places, the bottom is a bit loose and there are traces of paint loss, splits, cracks, scuffs, chips, scratches, old woodworm holes (which have been treated) and general wear. It measures 24″ long x 12.2″ wide x 10.4 tall (61 cm x 31 cm x 26.5 cm). DUE TO THE FACT THAT CAMERAS AND COMPUTERS HAVE COLOR VARIATIONS, WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DIFFERENCES IN PICTURES VERSUS ACTUAL COLOR. WE TRY TO DESCRIBE THE ACTUAL COLORS TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITY. Bearing its original red and blue paint, together with Pennsylvania German floral decorations. Appears to be poplar wood. Bears two painted names, one on each side. I can only discern one last name being HUNTZ. I can not read the name on the other side rail. Both names bear the date of 1921 underneath, presumed to be a wedding or dowry rack. One full width drawer in folk art paint in red, and one small drawer underneath, this drawer in soldier blue and red paint. Later hang up hooks on back. The paint is DRY and WORN and shows the great patina and oxidation we all look for. This condition of the paint may be a little rough for some, but others will accept the natural wear. Displays beautifully, and is a nice medium size without being overbearing. Tall to bottom drawer. As described above, and as shown in the photos. No reproduction without prior written consent. Thank you and Enjoy! BE SURE YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH THIS ITEM AS DESCRIBED AND AS PICTURED. If the item fails to sell when the listing has ended, only then will we possibly consider an offer for the item. And again, we will NOT respond to any message received while the listing is active. African kente and textiles. Brass / Bronze / Lost wax. Oil paint / Ghana Signboards. Wood and other Artifacts. Art Movie posters Ghana. Tuareg Art and Crafts. Movie poster African cinema folk wall art hand painted Ghana Occultic Wedding. OCCULTIC WEDDING 3 Beautiful authentic hand-painted movie poster from Ghana, West Africa. DETAILS FOR THIS FILM AND POSTER: Film: OCCULTIC WEDDING 3 African – Ritual – JuJu – Black magic film. Poster: Hand Painted in Ghana by ARMAHSCO for JK video. Art size 60″ x 38 1/2″ (152 cm x 98 cm). Condition: In good condition with a few damages, some repairs, in some places the paint is off and some wear in the art work due to usage. This is not a print! Its a real oil paint! A real piece of Authentic African Art! This type of posters are highly collectible and many times displayed in Museums all over the world! With the arrival of video and video cassettes during 1980s In Ghana (West Africa) a small-scale film distribution / mobile Cinema was created. This small size mobile “Cinema” operators were equipped with a television a Video and sometimes with a small portable generator and were moving from town to town from village to village operating and showing their films! (During the day inside social clubs or houses and during the night in the open air). In order to attract more customers and in order to advertise their mission and business the need of huge posters was created and born. Talented artists after viewing the film were creating large size posters using oil paint on canvas (Because of unavailability and high cost of imported canvas , The artists were using used flour sacks sewn together). The artist had the freedom to add or change scenes seen or not seen in the film in order to make the poster more attractive (This is the reason that this hand painted posters are more interesting as ART than the normal posters since each of this hand painted poster is UNIQUE and except the film content it also express the artist himself). These posters were rolled or folded and easy to move around with the mobile Cinema. Because of the posters ” hard ” life (Folded or rolled, under the rain and sun and display for several months during their rounds all over Ghana) most of the surviving posters have damage at the end of the canvas, peelings, cracking and other damages. By the mid 1990s the mobile Cinema business declined and almost collapsed since television and video was more widely available in Ghana. The profits of the mobile Cinema operators were also reduced and they were not able to afford the “expensive” talented artists to paint their posters anymore. At the present days they have to rely with Photocopy paper posters in order to survive and reduce cost. Early Antique Folk Art Hand Painted Wedding Trunk Blanket Chest Dovetailed Dated
EARLY ANTIQUE FOLK ART HAND PAINTED WOOD WEDDING TRUNK BLANKET CHEST DOVETAILED DATED 1868! Up for sale is this amazing hand painted trunk, blanket chest or mule chest. It’s a beautiful large chest with tons of character and that true folk art flavor. Many trunks that were highly decorated like this were wedding trunks but who can know? It has a hinged lid as you can see in the pictures. The trunk has an wonderful, dark brown black base color with reddish-orange, and faded yellow (tannish) highlighted accents in the folk art / floral painting. It looks like the flowers are tulips to us and there are reddish accents here and there. The paint appears to be all original and has nicks, chips and scrapes on it as you’d expect from and item of this age. You can also see the painted date on the front of 1868!! The top of the trunk is just plain with the exception of one very faint flower in the center. The lid has a lot of patina, scuffs and wear from things being on it and years of use. The front board of the top is likely newer and was replaced as the side boards of the top are fatter than the front board of the top. Under the trunk the legs are square and hold the trunk up off the ground. The legs have big wooden pegs that go through the bottom of the trunk and come up on the inside. They are about 1 in diameter. The legs are nicked, dinged and worn as you’d expect. There are also a number of old worm holes in the legs. There are not that many worm holes in the bottom board of the trunk which we thought was nicely surprising! Please look closely at the pictures and you can see all of this. On the front there’s an black iron escutcheon for the lock. You can see the lock on the pictures of the inside. We do not have the key and don’t know if the lock works. We do know that there’s nothing for the lock to grab hold of on the lid so having a key may not help things if you are trying to lock things up. There probably was an iron peg / shank that would come down and fit in the lock but it’s gone. Under the lid on the left side there’s a mouse hole where a little critter gnawed a hole to get in! Inside there is a little till on the left side. This was often used for small valuables and items so they did not get lost in the big trunk. The till has a hinged wood lid. This is not common as usually these little tills get broken or lost over time. There’s another mouse hole in the till on the vertical part of the right side under the lid toward the back. The trunk’s lid is held on to the back with old hinges. We don’t think these are original and you can see where there may have been other hinges at one point. The hinges have newer screws in them but still old, just not as old as the trunk. There are mouse holes, or wear at those two old hinge locations also. Just under the lid, on the front, there are a lot of little holes. Perhaps this had an upholstered top or something at one point as they look like little tack marks all along the top of the front board under the lid. The hand painting on the front and sides is a very colorful collection of flowers and organic motifs. The trunk is wonderfully hand painted. Inside, the trunk is clean but worn. There are old worm holes in the bottom and around the inside as you’d expect from an old item like this. The sides of the trunk as are dovetailed in to the front and back. There’s also some sort of swirls on the side in a very dark color and the color of the trunk. This is very hard to see because of the color. The dovetails are also hard to see but they are the thick kind. If you look closely in the black area you can see them. The back of the trunk is clean and has scrapes and nicks. And yes, it has a little critter hole down at the bottom! Whatever was in this trunk must have been very inviting to those dang critters!! The trunk has a wonderful patina to it. The trunk has some paint wear, paint loss, edge wear, nicks, scrapes, dings, fade, wear and overall age marks. There are spots, scuffs, streaks and grain lift. You can see all of this in the pictures and it’s what you’d expect from a trunk that’s almost 150 years old!! It’s a large size and measures. 48 inches wide at the top. 44.5 inches wide at the trunk. 20 3/4 inches deep at the top. 20 inches deep at the trunk. 2 1/2 inches high at the drawer. 18 1/2 inches deep inside the trunk. 50 x 29 x 25. We can also recommend a couple of shippers. This is a very nice trunk for those of you who love Primitives or folk art. It’s one of a kind! It would certainly make for an interesting conversation piece. Thank you for looking at this item. Let us know if you have any questions. We regularly put up new items so check out our other items. EARLY ANTIQUE FOLK ART HAND PAINTED WOOD WEDDING TRUNK BLANKET CHEST DOVETAILED DATED 1866! Up for sale is this amazing hand painted trunk, blanket chest or mule chest. It’s a beautiful long and large chest with tons of character and that true folk art flavor. Many trunks that were highly decorated like this were wedding trunks but who can know? It has a snipe hinged lid as you can see in the pictures. The trunk has a wonderful, dark black base color with red, white, faded yellow and green highlighted accents in the folk art / floral painting. It looks like the flowers are tulips to us and there are white little accents here and there. The paint appears to be all original and has nicks, chips, scrapes, fading and patina on it as you’d expect from an item of this age. You can also see the painted date on the front of 1866!! The top of the trunk was painted but has worn off. You can still see some of the floral accent on the back portion of the lid. This was probably used as a seat at some point and the paint rubbed off where the people sat. The lid has a lot of patina, scuffs and wear as well as some green paint. Under the trunk, the legs are square and hold the trunk up off the ground. We have felt pads on the legs to protect our floors but those could be removed if you don’t want them. The construction of the trunk has dovetail mortises on the ends. You can easily see these on the sides and back. They are there on the front but the dark paint hides them, look closely. The top and bottom have wooden peg construction and you can see pegs across the front lip of the lid as well as in the bottom into the sides, front and back of the trunk. The lid is held on with old, forged iron snipe-style hinges. You have to jiggle the lid a little to get it to sit down on the frame as it has to come over the front of the trunk before it will sit down all the way. Inside it’s pretty clean. There are a lot of marks in the wood, we don’t know what these are from. The inside is a very dark brown color and the nicks/marks are light. There is a center divider and makes two compartments. The hand painting on the front is a collection of flowers and organic motifs. The trunk is wonderfully hand painted. Inside, the trunk is clean but worn. The back of the trunk is pretty clean considering its age. Look at the back board, it’s one big board!! That’s a nice piece of wood! The trunk has a wonderful patina to it. The trunk has some paint wear, paint loss, edge wear, nicks, scrapes, dings, fade, wear and overall age marks. There are spots and scuffs. You can see all of this in the pictures and it’s what you’d expect from a trunk that’s over 150 years old!! It’s a large size and measures. 92.25 long at the top. 90.75 long at the trunk. 16.75 inches deep at the top. 14.75 deep inside. You will need to coordinate this. Plycon is a good source for a blanket wrap shipper. This is a very nice trunk for those of you who love Primitives or folk art. It’s one of a kind! It would certainly make for an interesting conversation piece. Thank you for looking at this item. Let us know if you have any questions. We regularly put up new items so check out our other items.
