This is a wonderful antique c. 1900 impressionistic oil on board painting done by an unknown artist where the main focus of the painting is a bucolic North Conway, New Hampshire late summer landscape with a probable view of Mount Washington in the background – the artist has done a masterful job in depicting this tranquil scene with a slow-moving stream in the foreground meandering across the front of a meadow where the stream has a small island in it with clumps of grass & pink flowers growing on the surface of the island – the artist used a subtle palette of muted browns, grays, greens, & pinks to recreate the natural scene that he saw as it was 120 plus years ago – the sparse growths of pine trees were shown with bolder & more vibrant shades of green colors. The create a sense of distance, the artist depicted Mt. Washington using a very muted palette of off-whites, grays, & browns which gives the impression of the range of mountains as being somewhat shrouded in mist – this technique also creates a sense of space between the meadow & the range of mountains – this painting has been professionally conserved at some time in the recent past to the extent of cleaning & re-varnishing the surface of the painting. Within the conservation process, there was the creation of a strong support system on the reverse of the artist board consisting of a rectangular wooden structure with vertical wooden struts all of which strengthen the integrity of the artist board – when looking at the reverse of the painting, one can see “North Conway” written in pencil by the artist in the upper left corner – the same is also written across the reverse of the painting in large penciled letters. The painting itself measures 16″ x 10″ sight size, & is in very good condition for its age – the painting was recently fitted with a gilded wooden frame which measures 18″ x 12″, & is in excellent condition – in my humble opinion, the gilded frame greatly enhances the painting.
