4 Victorian Children in Rural Landscape. Folk art oil on canvas painting. Naive or primitive style. This is a lovely folk art (naive, primitive, outsider) oil on canvas portrait of four children of various ages, including three girls and one boy, in a natural landscape setting. The sumptuous Victorian costume suggests that it was likely commissioned by a wealthy family during the latter half of the 19th century. The canvas-maker’s stamp on the reverse side, “WINSOR & NEWTON, 38, RATHBONE PLACE, LONDON, ” indicates that the work is likely English in origin. The painting is by an unknown (likely itinerant) artist; unsigned; framed in a gold gesso frame. The face of the painting is in good condition. Partial relining along bottom (full edge) and top edge (4″-5″ section only) of canvas. 5 small scratches, scuffs (edges – where canvas meets stretcher); 1 dent approx. 1/16; 2 patch repairs (not visible, except from back). Frame is in good condition (for its age). STRETCHER SIZE: 27.5 inches x 33 inches (69.85 cm x 83.82 cm). FRAME SIZE: 34.75 inches x 39.5 inches x 3 inches (88.265 cm x 100.33 cm x 7.62 cm). Oil on panel Size without frame : 9.5″ x 13.5″ Size including frame : 14.5″ x 17.0″. A colourful folk scene of children dragging a hand-cart full of (fire) wood as a group of resting hunters look on. Most probably rural France; a very well painted, and typical, example of the work of Maröhn. On a lovely chamfered teak panel – often the sign of a very good artist. Very clearly signed in bottom Right Hand corner. Ready to hang straight on the wall where it is at the moment in my study, and has been for a number of years! Ferdinand Maröhn (also called Maronnio) was born in Germany, lived in France and painted mostly in a Dutch style. His biographical data are only partially known but. He exhibited many times at the Berlin Academy and, from 1846 to 1859, in several Parisian Salons. Maröhn was a prolific artist whose works have been included in the collections of some French museums (Reims and Ajaccio). Ian Emmerson Paintings was established in 1975 and was incorporated in 1997. We have always specialized in 19. Century British and European fine art and, being based in Northumberland, in artists/paintings of the North East of England/Newcastle. Our website went live in 2008 and has been a crucial part of our business since then and bears the name James Alder Fine Art to reflect James’ contribution to the business over many years, although he has now retired.
