Rare Antique Folk art oil. Skowhegan Falls. Maine. USA. Ca. 1860
Rare Antique Folk art oil. Dimensions: 22 x 19 inches without frame. 25 x 22 inches with frame. Description: Oil on canvas. Titled Skowhegan Maine on the back. Very interesting folk art painting with view from the Skowhegan Falls before the dams. The scene shows figures cutting wood and people in boats picking up logs from the water. Log driving was popular in Skowhegan from the early 19th century until it ended in 1976. The first settlers cut the trees on their farms to build log cabins and barns. When they started to run out of trees in this area, so they had to cut the trees up the river and float them down river to Skowhegan. They built sawmills on the Skowhegan island in order to saw lumber to build the houses in Skowhegan village. Later they built pulp and paper mills up and down the Kennebec river, and began to cut pulpwood for making paper. The painting originates from a Norwegian family whose relations worked in Maine. A very rare oil and a collectors dream. Condition: Ready to hang. The oil could use a light cleaning, due to the old age. Otherwise fine with no holes, tears or missing paint. The original salon frame has minor scratches due to the age. All our items are located at our gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. There is a beautiful decorated carpet at their feet. It is in its original grain painted frame. The backing was removed and updated to an acid free black mat and archival corners. The size of the watercolor is 9 X 10 1/2. ” The frame is 12 3/4″ 14 5/8. Provenance is from the Lynn Dingus Collection in Ohio. That is her label on the back of the watercolor. Antique Folk Art Hall Tree Maine c. 1860s Great Old Paint Make Do AAFA
Folk art hall tree / painted wood, repurposed materials / Maine / c. Whimsical antique painted folk art hall tree in green and gold, Maine, c. The piece is composed of a back board cut from a single plank in an eccentric silhouette onto which found and repurposed elements were attached to fashion a hat and coat rack. The radiating turned arms originate from a late 18th or early 19th century yarn winder or spinning wheel, as do the capped dowel hooks and turned feet. At its waist is mounted a mysterious birdhouse-like box with a indicator intended to spin, its purpose unknown perhaps a conveniently-placed penny bank if change remained in your coat pocket? The hall tree is painted a brilliant emerald green with gold stencil embellishments and borders. A fun and playful piece of folk art furniture to brighten your entryway, equally at home in traditional and modern environments. Very good antique condition. The spinning wheel arm hooks are attached at the hub with the original iron bolt and are secured by an additional screw or two and the back (as seen in the photos). The piece shows some evidence of earlier repairs. For more pleasing and peculiar objects, follow “oldasadam” on Instagram and Facebook. Nice old hand painted sign from South Thomaston, Maine featuring black hand lettering on a light grey background. This sign came from the side of a large box. Some of the molding has been added to the sides and the top edge. The bottom edge molding is original. The paint is honest and original old paint. The sign is rough and not professionally painted. The wood is pine and it is very thin and light and will display nicely on the wall. Constructed from two boards, the bottom board has a slight warp and the painter has painted right over the imperfection. Toy Manchester Terrier OOB ca1880s, Maine, framed oil painting, dog folk art
We offer for sale a really wonderful piece of Victorian folk art, a painting of a dog standing on a chair looking out the window in great anticipation. We’ve taken the liberty of calling it “Waiting for Her Mistress” as it so aptly describes the scene. This oil on board came from Portland, Maine, circa 1880s (see below). PAINTING SUBJECT & SCENE. We are not art experts or historians but will share our conclusions about this unsigned piece of domestic genre art. The subject is charming, colorful, expressive, and well detailed in a feminine style so likely the artist was a lady of means, a gifted amateur. Women were more likely than men not to sign their works. The curtains are lace, the walls papered with a leaf pattern, the carpeting covered with repeating flowers, the green velvet ottoman fully braided, all carefully detailed. The Victorian parlor chair features small wheels in front and an ornate crest rail with ears. On the windowsill sits a slim vase holding flowers. The dog is likely a Toy Manchester Terrier, a popular breed at the time when ears and tail were not to be cropped. Bright light better shows the dog’s tan snout. The dog is female and has a cute collar with a big red bow. THE PAINTING AND FRAME. Oil on board, with a period label on the back. Of Portand, Maine, was a popular drugstore that expanded into other provisions including artists’ supplies. The original frame is of intricately detailed plaster with shiny gold paint. It shows its age with normal cracks and occasional small pieces lacking. 23″ wide by 24-3/4″ high by 2-1/4 deep. 16-1/2″ wide by 18-1/4″ high. Weighs nearly 8 pounds unpacked. A painting that’s 130 years old will have some issues, but overall this one is in very good condition with no serious damage. There is some normal crackling and a few missing tiny flakes, and a very small section of one chair leg looks like it might have been retouched in the past. There is wear around the edges where the board touches the frame. A new frame would cover that up. The board is no longer totally flat but it’s not obvious or detracting and won’t affect reframing. It could use cleaning to brighten up the colors that have normal darkening with age. This painting has so much appeal. It tells a story — use your imagination! Please see photos for details. WITH OR WITHOUT FRAME. Please wait for an invoice before paying. Thank you for viewing. We want happy customers so please ask any questions beforehand. We give feedback when we receive feedback. PLEASE DO NOT PAY UNTIL INVOICED. Loup Garou Books & Antiques. The item “Toy Manchester Terrier OOB ca1880s, Maine, framed oil painting, dog folk art” is in sale since Wednesday, April 3, 2019.
