ANTIQUE RELIGIOUS PAINTING CANVAS FOLK ART 18th/19TH C ANGEL HOLY CATHOLIC
Auctions is pleased to offer a superb folk art votive painting depicting an Angel or The Christ Child. This superb example is painting on canvas and mounted on board. CIRCA LATE 1700s-early 1800s. FRAME: 9 x 5 inches. CORRECT SIZE: 6 1/2 x 5 1/4. This is the stunning original hand-carved gesso and gilt painted pine frame. Showing wear commensurate with age, and dates probably to the late 18th or early 19th century. There was however non-original tape on the back which I removed. Will need some new nails on the back for conservation. The painting has some wear and patina on it as well. Painting is on canvas and mounted on pine board. See photos for details. This has not been restored. It was previously owned by an antique dealer picked up items on her travels in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. She was a collector of religious art. This is a Peruvian Cusco Folk Art Painting that. Depicts a Religious Portrait of an Angel with a Fire Sword. This painting is framed in an Outstanding Antique Style Frame with a variety of Decorative Floral & Leaf Patterns. The painting itself measures 11″ x 15″ and with the frame it all measures 21″ x 25″. It weighs approximately around 12 pounds and it’s ready to be displayed… The Cusco School is a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in Cusco, Peru during the Colonial period from the 16th to the 18th Centuries. The European influence in these paintings came from the Spanish who tried to convert the Incas to Catholicism. Cusco Paintings are characterized by their exclusive use of religious images, lack of perspective, and the predominance of red, yellow, and earth colors. They also use a lot of gold leaf. The subjects are usually depicted in native flora and fauna as a backdrop. Most of these paintings were created anonymously because of Pre-Columbian traditions that define art as communal. Lawrence Lebduska The Garden of Eden(Wildlife) Naive Religious, Folk Art
Almost every artist I post for sales is in the top 1-3% for book mentions, museums that have their work, success in their style or era, and highest prices achieved. Lebduska is an interesting artist and I think the potential for his art exploding in value is possible, especially if there is a major museum retrospection which has helped many artists’ art prices and overall reputation get boosted. I remember years ago how Edward Hopper’s art went up many echelons as did Childe Hassam and other artists. I have been saving this one for quite a while. It was painted by one of the most inspirational artists that I have ever read about. I want you to research the amazing recovery that he made from the depths of despair about fifty years ago. Check Askart to see how many books he has been written about and the museums that have his art up to the year 2000, including the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, one great museum. The museums are throughout the United States, not particularly regional like many artists. His paintings in the 1930’s are credited with motivating Abby Rockefeller to amass her folk art collection. Lawrence Lebduska’s art style has been referred to as naive religious, folk, fantasy filled, symbolic, and bold in color. His animals, found in many of his paintings may be peaceful, playful or occasionally fearful or menacing. In this Garden of Eden painting(Wildlife) do you think that is a crown of thorns? If you investigate his art on Artvalue you will see why I think that. Is there a snake in that unique tree? I like it too much but it might need a home to be displayed. His “Cause of Struggle” is the best folk painting that I have ever seen. I rambled enough, read about one of America’s most amazing artists. This painting has a good sized image of 20″x22″ and is oil on canvas and signed, “Lebduska” in the lower right. I think his art might grow on you if you see more of his paintings. Many of the Haitian paintings that I have seen remind me of his art. It is framed, I never took digitals, and is in very good condition. If you are interested you will find it. It is in a safe, bubble wrapped environment. The item “Lawrence Lebduska The Garden of Eden(Wildlife) Naive Religious, Folk Art” is in sale since Friday, June 02, 2017. RELIGIOUS PAINTING ON TIN. DUE TO THE FACT THAT CAMERAS AND COMPUTERS HAVE COLOR VARIATIONS, WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DIFFERENCES IN PICTURES VERSUS ACTUAL COLOR. WE TRY TO DESCRIBE THE ACTUAL COLORS TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITY. An 1800s period oil painting on tin. Spanish Colonial, depicting a Saint. This one is very well executed, and shows a Saint with wings as well as a heavenly cloud to the upper right. Below at his feet are micro painted scenes of life. No signature is found. The painting is “untouched”, meaning it shows no alterations or any attempts to clean. It shows overall patina on the paint which has darkened the image. Light spotty and minuscule oxidation spots are present. We used the camera flash to accentuate the painted images. Reality, the painting is darker than shown. Guaranteed period and NOT a reproduction, n or an old print. 10 (x) 6 3/4 in. As described above, and as shown in the photos. No reproduction without prior written consent. Thank you and Enjoy! BE SURE YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH THIS ITEM AS DESCRIBED AND AS PICTURED. If the item fails to sell when the listing has ended, only then will we possibly consider an offer for the item. Very unique, one of a kind, original 16.5″ x 12.5″ (total size to include frame) oil on tin painting believed to be by listed, famous artist Retablo. I believe his signature mark is “soiled”/rusted over on left side, midway up the frame. Or, even better, Its not a Retablo and the artist signature mark is down on the bottom right side with what looks like a W with a T going through it. Either way, it is unique, a little bit scary, and tells a story that I’ve only begun to understand. It is reminiscent of Da Vinci mixed with Salvador Dali and Folk Art depicting a midevil religious scene/story. Notice the rocket / jet on the right! It is a “chilly” depiction but does not give any feeling or energy of that nature at all. It is rather memorizing in that you can look at it for hours and a story begins to unfold. It is a soft, calm, painting with an ornate carved, deep detailed wood frame of a natural light color. It does not look painted or stained. This particular piece of art has not been altered, has minor rust with small areas of paint missing and areas that need cleaned as I only did a very light surface clean to it and not sure if existing can or should be cleaned as it may change / damage the art. The frame can be cleaned deeper, I’m sure…. I consider to be in very good condition compared to others this age.. Almost excellent when compared.
