Americana Folk Art Native American Indian Chief Playing Cards Portrait Painting
This striking hand-painted artwork on wood board brings a bold sense of rustic Americana to any space. The piece features a detailed portrait of a Native American chief, his face rendered with expressive care and framed by a traditional feathered headdress and vivid garments in shades of crimson, gold, and turquoise. Surrounding the portrait are four trompe l’oeil playing cards – the Ace of Spades, Ace of Diamonds, Ace of Hearts, and Ace of Clubs – cleverly painted to create the illusion of actual cards casually resting atop the wood surface. This playful, saloon-inspired detail adds a whimsical yet nostalgic layer to the composition, blending elements of frontier-era folklore with classic folk art tradition. Dating to circa 1900, it is artist signed toward the bottom. Measures 20.25 inches high, 14.25 inches wide, and 0.75 inch deep. There is a hook at the top for wall display. Good antique condition with light signs of age-related wear. Please review the photos for further condition assessment. The artwork is presented within a deeply weathered, rustic wood frame that complements the warm patina and aged character of the painted board. The frame’s rough-hewn texture and natural imperfections enhance the authentic, timeworn charm of the piece. Ideal for lodge-style interiors, Western-themed rooms, or game rooms in need of a distinctive accent, this unique painting captures both the spirit of vintage tavern art and the enduring appeal of handcrafted Americana. Old, 1968 oil painting on heavy Masonite board depicting an American Western scene. Signed lower left by the artist, “Denver” along with artist device bear claw or longhorn? Untouched condition painting has never even been cleaned. I see no condition problems and the colors are still really nice. The frame has a lot of loss but this doesn’t jump out at me because it has a sort of distressed look anyway. In this painting by Denver, we have a Native American man. He has a knife on his belt, a peace pipe with feathers dangling down, feathers in his hair, jewelry, etc. He’s reaching up toward the sky, perhaps doing some ritual. There’s a cattle skull on the ground. His horse is off grazing, to the right. I’m unsure if this would be considered the American West or Southwest. The mountain or big butte has some nice, pink color to it. It was in their American Indian and Western Firearm Antique Sale. It was titled “Buffalo Range”. Since it was dated and from 1984, I take it that the artist actively painted in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. The artist, Denver, will be hard to research because everything from Colorado, where Denver is, and the singer John Denver! Will come up in search results. I think he was a talented, Regionalist, Outsider Artist. It seems like people think of Folk Art and Naive art as at least similar to Outsider Art but they’re just all terms I guess. Denver was painting in his own style, a blend of realism and colorful impressionism. Since he apparently specialized in Native American themes such as this and the bison, he carved out a genre for himself much like Albert Looking Elk did with painting Taos Pueblo scenes. Oil on Masonite board. Signed and dated “Denver”, “68” and with artist’s device. Mounted in shabby chic, distressed frame. Painting measures 16 x 14 inches. Overall measurements with frame: 19 5/8 x 17 5/8 inches. Painting itself in excellent original condition. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”. Embryonic Spirit by artist Sunset Gypsy reflects intuition and feelings experienced before her baby sister was born. The rhythms of the colors were painted to how the wood grain naturally flowed. The abstract mother figure is on the top left, and the turtle on the left is the spirit guide/protector. A woodpecker nearby the mother guides them both. Colors represent the ever-flowing nature of life and the love brought to us each day. Measures 22″ x 25″ Inches. Contact me and I will be glad to answer your questions.
