This is a whimsical whirligig made & signed by ALVIN L. I used to live for a time in the St. Louis area and came upon Mr. Hall and his yard of whirligigs with a FOR SALE sign on his fence. He and his wife were retired and moving to Florida and he could not take his hobby whirligigs. This one is “Man Chopping Wood” and was made in 1977 and is typical of his personal style. The length of this whirligig is 36″ and the wooden propellers are 15&1/2″ across. The wood painted tail of the whirligig measures 12″ x 8″. The man is nicely carved and is 8 from his boots to the top of his hat. Hall showed me his little backyard workshop shed where he worked with simple hand tools to make his wind machines. NOTICE how when the wind moves the propeller (he has added thin metal and curved it to get more of the wind), it is attached to a metal shaft which then is bent so it goes in a rotation and Mr. Hall designed the chopper so that his upper body pivots up and down thereby “chopping his wood with his ax”. This American folk art whirligig is in mild weathered condition but that is part of the charm. It works perfectly and has no issues. I will create packaging that will be able to protect the piece during transport. The item “REDUCED! Vintage 1977 FOLK ART Carved & Painted WHIRLIGIG/Wood Chopper/ALVIN HALL” is in sale since Wednesday, November 28, 2018. This item is in the category “Antiques\Primitives”. The seller is “artistvoodoo” and is located in Willimantic, Connecticut. This item can be shipped to United States.

Folk art hall tree / painted wood, repurposed materials / Maine / c. Whimsical antique painted folk art hall tree in green and gold, Maine, c. The piece is composed of a back board cut from a single plank in an eccentric silhouette onto which found and repurposed elements were attached to fashion a hat and coat rack. The radiating turned arms originate from a late 18th or early 19th century yarn winder or spinning wheel, as do the capped dowel hooks and turned feet. At its waist is mounted a mysterious birdhouse-like box with a indicator intended to spin, its purpose unknown perhaps a conveniently-placed penny bank if change remained in your coat pocket? The hall tree is painted a brilliant emerald green with gold stencil embellishments and borders. A fun and playful piece of folk art furniture to brighten your entryway, equally at home in traditional and modern environments. Very good antique condition. The spinning wheel arm hooks are attached at the hub with the original iron bolt and are secured by an additional screw or two and the back (as seen in the photos). The piece shows some evidence of earlier repairs. For more pleasing and peculiar objects, follow “oldasadam” on Instagram and Facebook. Once in awhile you come across a piece that is just dripping with age, color and beauty. Here is one, we feel is just wonderful. The old surface and paint is amazing. The sign is two sided and framed, partially in a heavy wooden frame. Not sure why the frame is not complete. We found the sign in New Jersey in a collection. The sign is two sided and the second side has melted varnish that affects the image. We have seen this before on signs from the south that face excessive heat. The sign is hung from two old iron hooks and can be displayed as two sided or one against a wall. Castle Hall was an old Cuban brand, revitalized by K. Hansotia and the team at Gurkha. The brand became extinct when Castro nationalized the industry in the 1950’s. The sign is 42 3/4″ tall including the hooks x 20 3/4″ wide including the frame, the frame is 2 3/4 thick. The sign board itself without the frame is 3/4 thick solid board. A nice sturdy heavy sign as you would expect from a cigar company. The item “Antique Painted Wooden Castle Hall Cigar Folk Art Sign” is in sale since Tuesday, March 5, 2019. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Advertising\Merchandise & Memorabilia\Signs\Original\Pre-1930″. The seller is “olegolfguy” and is located in Columbia, Pennsylvania.
