This Exquisite Large size decorative pot of a Dove made by master potter. José Luis Cortéz Hernández. It is a wonderful example of. Barro Bruñido / Burnished Clay. Mexican Folk art and Ceramic traditions from this area of Mexico. This piece was all Painted and then given a lovely hand burnished satin finish. It measures 6 inches tall by 12 inches long and 8 inches deep. Luis was one of 5 of Salvador Vazquez’ original apprentices; trained in the classic Barro Bruñido technique that is famous in Tonalá. Luis’ work often features elements of dimension that seem to bring his pieces to life. Each piece is painstakingly burnished by hand prior to the final firing. Estate fresh wonderful antique folk art pottery wall pocket. Very old paint, small chip back of pocket, right bird has tail feather broken off, painted over, dribbles, splashes, old white, blue, paint, small split on left bird’s right chest. Piece is very delicate. Certainly not new so please take advantage of zoom or enlarge feature and study all photos thoroughly. Approx 9″ X 3 3/4″ deep X 9 tall. Exquisite Early Folk Art Wooden Butterfly Corner Shelf Hand Carved/ Painted

Up for sale is this phenomenal example of early hand painted figural folk art in the form of a dramatic multicolor butterfly. This piece is composed of multiple types of hand paint woods fashioned in the form of a corner shelf with a delicately hewn center tapering at each end, scalloped carved edges on the wings of the butterfly, and hand carved zig zag pattern wood on the edge of the shelf. The wood is then hand painted with a variety of colors including orange, red, white, yellow, burgundy, and green which create a beautiful composition that at times references naturalism in the form of flowers and vines and at times enters the realms of abstraction as can be seen in the swirling lines of the lower wings resembling paintings by Morris Lewis, and the chevrons of the center body which mimic the chevron patterns of the shelf edge. This is a truly incredible piece of early folk art, all hand made and hand painted, measuring just shy of 23 in total height and with a shelf that extends out approximately 5. This piece is in lovely condition with a surface that shows its age and history without being overtly or unflatteringly worn or damaged. There is some minor paint splatter on the shelf, which could be cleaned professionally if you so choose and there is a small chip pictured along one of the scallops of the upper wing. Canvas surface is 36″ tall by 30 1/4″ wide unframed. Painting is 42″ tall by 36″ wide framed. A large, absolutely exquisite painting executed by H. Hechavarria was a Latin American Folk artist who painted in the 1960s and 1970s. My late paternal grandparents were active and enthusiastic art collectors and benefactors who discovered (and in some instances supported) several “outsider” artists in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s… Long before the genre was identified as “outsider” and they assembled a considerable collection of “outsider” art, folk art and primitive art which they enjoyed displaying in their expansive North Lakeshore Drive home. Upon their deaths many of the pieces in their collection were bequeathed to The Art Institute of Chicago. This painting, which has hung on our wall since 1973, has been immaculately maintained and is offered in its original frame.
