The wheat beneath his paws has already been cut; behind him a scythe curves out of the shadow, and a skull dissolves into the dark at his shoulder. He has laid his head down on the harvest and looks out at us, entirely unaware. The harvest has already begun. He is lying in it. The image borrows the tenderness of a Victorian animal portrait and turns it – sweetness held against the quiet fact of mortality.
