This is a charming one-of-a-kind 19th century. A beautifully executed figural portrait of a young lad in colonial dress with a book. Painting has exceptional colours & folk art detailing on clothing and facial features; note the black scrollwork linear flourishes, pronounced eye lashes and flushed cheeks. Painting is on a humble wood board with a subtle random grain texture which adds to the charm & there is a simple round metal loop. Please see item description. ANTIQUE OIL PAINTING Welsh Romantic Primitive Landscape MONMOUTHSHIRE 1878. “A View in Monmouthshire” By Frederick Lena 1878. Highly decorative primitive school painting of a view in Monmouthshire. Provenance- Private collection, Parkside Villa, Suffolk. Size- 19.5 by 15.5 inches approx including frame. Medium- Oils on canvas laid to wooden panel. Frame- Antique wooden frame, some knocks and losses, offered free with the painting. Condition- We would be very happy to hang this one as found. It is in pretty good condition given its age. The item has been professionally cleaned though there is still some residual varnish browning visible. Light craqueleur and some verticle striations from the timbering beneath the canvas. Signature- Unsigned, later inscription on the reverse. Wonderful early piece with wonderful form and great surface. Paint has been touched up but touch ups appear old. No idea of context, but a wonderful carved fragment with a great look. The face is gorgeous. Mounted later on a more modern stand which makes display easy, in a great size to work in any space. Please use photos and zoom feature for most accurate condition. Measures about 12″ by 7″ by 5. Please get them approved before purchasing. Any questions must be answered before the sale.
