Incredible Antique African American Black Folk Art Slave Oil Painting WOW
This is an Incredible and museum worthy Antique African American Black Folk Art Oil Painting on wood board, depicting a sullen field slave sitting inside of a barn, with an overseer or well dressed house slave appearing to chastise him. The central figure has an anguished expression, and his back appears to be bloodied from the lashes of a whip. His white cotton shirt is hanging behind him and is also stained with blood. In the lower right corner of the scene, two nestled hens peek their heads out from a pile of straw. I have been collecting African American Folk Art for a very long time, and have Never In My Life came across an artwork with such raw historical value and subject matter. This belongs in a museum, and would be the paramount piece of any serious Black Folk Art collection. Signed and dated: H. Nickels’36 in the lower right corner. I could not find any information on this artist, but perhaps you know more about him or his work. The creation date of 1936 puts this piece firmly in the early Jim Crow era, and may have been painted by someone who witnessed this scene or was personally familiar with this sort of sad situation. The historical importance of this painting cannot be understated. Approximately 29 1/8 x 37 1/8 inches including frame. Actual artwork is approximately 24 x 32 inches. Good condition for age, with minor paint loss in some areas, and light scuffing and edge wear to the original period frame please see photos. This is for the serious collector of Black Folk Art – American Folk Art. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”. The seller is “willsusa_utzeqm” and is located in this country: US. Credited to listed artist Antonio Romano. Primitive modernist, Antonio Romano, is a classically trained artist with ancestral roots dating back five generations, who developed a distinctive style combining modernism and narrative folk art, with an aura of surrealism and mystery. The influence of Man Ray, Giorgio De Chirico, the Italian Futurists, Paul Delvaux and Rene Magritte is acknowledged, but Romano has assimilated their influence and gone his own way to create stunning and provocative primitive modernist paintings that are carefully and skillfully conceived, designed and executed. Incorporating narrative folk artwork referencing American landscapes, scenes of historic action, or folk portraits of American Indians, soldiers and rogues, Romano is drawn to figurative reinterpretation of historic scenes and art of the past. A Fresco artist, Antonio Romano has a style that is reminiscent of a bygone era — influenced by the use of colors from that time as well as its imagery. His background as a fresco painter informs his unique contemporary style. Romano works with inks and dyes, often of his own formula, and with emulsions that he has created over the years, handed down by his ancestors. He applies his fresco and inks to the backsides of “found” canvases and discarded paintings that absorb his intricate layering of inks and images that transform the color palette giving the work a patina that communicates age and a modern sense of history. Romano was part of the emerging New York City art scene in the 1980s. He has done frescoes for the ceiling and walls of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Albany, Our Lady of Pompeii in Greenwich Village, and he designed the restaurant, Bella Blu Ristorante in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York where his fresco’s still hang on the walls. His works have been shown in several exhibitions including Art Port Gallery, New York, Mary Boone, New York, and John Sullivan Gallery, New York. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”. Rare and Unique Mose Tolliver, Mose T, painting. One of only a few that I had the pleasure of seeing him paint with children on the bus and not adults. It was not his typical subject matter. Enjoy it like I have for years. Mose was a self-taught artist. He started painting after a pallet of marble fell on his legs and crushed it while working at the furniture store. Mose began to paint on any surface-furniture, scraps, plywood, packing crate sides, Masonite, metal trays, board remnants, throw away chairs or other abandoned surfaces given to him. Mose used what he calls “pure paint, ” house paint-oil based at first, and then water-based latex. At first, he drew birds and flowers, then he expanded to people and children and some personal requests. Mose used his house on Sayre street as his art gallery. I would go down there and look at what new pieces he had painted and were for sale. He liked to talk about his painting. This piece is one of the unusual pieces I got the pleasure of purchasing. In raised relief it says The Prince of Casa Del Wattslo’Equal my AAASSS, from now on you be’N’ and I be’ Hunkie?? The N word is fully spelled out in the painting. This is a one of a kind original painting. Johnnie, an African American artist is incarcerated, has been painting about three years and is self taught. He has donated many of his paintings to support a program that allows men to earn their college degrees while behind bars. He has a rare eye disorder and is diagnosed as legally blind but still manages to create beautiful works of art. This is titled “Eve” and is hand painted in oil and oil pastels on canvas paper. It is unframed and signed. The photos where it is shown in a frame are just to help you visualize what the painting would look like in a frame. There is a crease in the paper in the back of the painting which does not seem to affect the front of the painting(please see photo). Color may vary slightly due to lighting.
