Condition: In very good condition with only few signs of wear in the art work due to usage. This is not a print! Its a real oil paint! A unique piece of Authentic African Art! Hand painted Ghana movie posters are unique pieces of Authentic African Art! This type of posters were exhibited many times in museums all over the world and are highly collectible! Here is a little about the origin of this form of art. With the arrival of video and video cassettes during 1980’s in Ghana (West Africa) a small-scale film distribution mobile Cinema was created. The local operators were equipped with a television, a video and occasionally with a portable generator. They were moving from place to place showing their films – sometimes inside social clubs or houses and during the night in open air!!! In order to gather as many spectators as possible they had to advertise their business and they needed huge posters. Because of this a new form of art was born. Talented artists after viewing the films were creating large size posters using oil paint on canvas, but because of the unavailability and high cost of the imported canvases, the artists were using used flour sacks sewn together. The artist had the freedom to add and change scenes seen, or not seen, in the movie in order to make the poster more attractive. This is the reason that this hand painted posters are considered more as an ART than the usual posters. Each of them is UNIQUE and except the film content they express the vision of artist himself. Because of the posters “hard” life (transported folded or rolled, displayed under the rain and sun for several months during their rounds all over Ghana) most of the posters were destroyed and the surviving ones have damages at the ends of the canvas, peelings, cracking and other signs of wear. By the mid 1990s, since television and video were more widely available in Ghana, the popularity of the mobile Cinema business declined and almost collapsed. The profits of the mobile Cinema operators decreased and they were not able to afford the “expensive” artists to paint their posters anymore. At the present days they are using photocopy paper posters in order to cut cost and survive. This is a keeper! Salesman’s sample miniature 2 drawer blanket chest in old dry dark green paint. The drawers are all hand made and constructed just like the full sized chests. The drawer pull knobs are antique knobs. The paint is original dark Windsor green paint with some in-painting on the edges. The top opens with miniature leather hinges. This is a reconstruction made from old recycled poplar with original dark green painted surface. The dimensions are: 10-1/4″ tall x 10″ wide x 4 deep (front to back). Antique Folk Art Old Paint Carnival Gambling Game Wheel Philadelphia Pa Dominoes. Neat old gaming wheel. Dates to the early 1900s. Maybe even late 1800s. Metal spokes are marked Something bearing Co Philadelphia Pa. I used to hang it with the domino side out via some metal wire wrapped around the nails on the back side. 1 and 5/16 inches across for the wood. 2 and half inches from nail to nail. Condition: Good overall condition. One area of paint touch up on the red border of the numeral side. Some writing on the numerical side. The dominos side looks real nice. I had this piece for a while before I noticed the repaint (mainly because I only displayed the domino side). Some other areas of wear and paint loss. Some minor wood loss along the borders.
