Antique wooden strong box, dating to the late 19th or perhaps early 20th century. European in origin, likely Central Europe. The purpose of the box originally was likely a document safe or keepsake box. The box is made of solid wood and has hand forged iron hardware. It is hand painted, stencils may have been used. The red, black, and yellow colors are still vibrant. If you look closely, especially at the top of box, photo three, this is not the original coat of paint. Beneath it appears to be a faded red. Some of the hardware has been painted to match the box. Last photo shows base of box. I see one metal nail. This is also likely a later addition. When the box is opened, you can see the inner hinge hardware. It operates smoothly; the pieces of the box fit perfectly; this is a well made piece. I think the chain shown was also added later. The hardware looks newer; the pieces where the chain attaches looks like the top of a flathead screw. The box measures 8 1/2 inches high, 15 1/4″ long, and 7 1/2″ deep. The lid has a 1/2 lip on the front 3 sides. A heavy box, it weighs just over 9 pounds. Very good antique condition with noted issues.
