85 MILES TO ROCK CITY 10x13in unframed. 13x16in framed Artist M. Offering a very unique and fine piece of southern folk art. This painting was done on a piece of cardboard that appears to be cut right off a cardboard box and decided to paint a fantastic picture at the spur of the moment. The painting is not cut evenly (please see pictures) that measures 10x13in unframed approximately and 13×16 framed. The top of the barn reads. “85 MILES TO ROCK CITY” which was very well known throughout the South on top of barns for many many years. The painting is a true representation of true folk art and will always be collected and sought after. The frame appears to be the original one and came off of a old structure and charred. A piece of outsider art bought in South Georgia. This particular masterpiece uses found objects from the woods of rural Georgia and old wood. This unique piece of art is titled a “Spooneriginal”. The front bottom right corner is signed BB SPOONER’83. The front is a picture of what looks like a cotton plant made with acorns and other pieces of nature. It’s placed on a rainbow painted canvas enclosed in a brown painted old found wood frame. The frame has holes from it being nailed in it’s prior use before being cut to make a frame. The frame has a small missing piece of wood on the left side at the bottom corner. This is a hand made piece and there are some small imperfections that are part of the artwork and some due to wear. Please look at the pictures for more details. The back of the picture has a description. Rural Ga piece of art made from all natural materials. Your work consists of bamboo vine, acorn hulls and pine tree bark. Framed with weathered wood and assembled by hand. No other like it exists. This picture measures 18″x12″. Measurements are: 17 3/8 by 17 1/2 and 1/8 thick. Reuben drilled one hole on top to hang it, but as uneven, another added. Worn edges, please see details in photos. Came from an artist’s estate. Painted in 1991, relative of estate said bought directly from R. This primitive piece is one of the works of RA (Reuben Aaron) Miller. It is painted on hard board and signed as shown. The piece has the inscription Lord Love You, which is a recurring theme in the artist’s work. This piece is visually very appealing and attractive. Condition is good, the board is stable and there are a few small blemishes consistent with age. Reuben Aaron Miller (July 22, 1912 – March 7, 2006) was a self-taught folk artist, best known for his whirligigs, metal cutouts and drawings. His work gained wider recognition in the 1980s, when it was featured in a music video, and subsequently exhibited in museums of art. Widely collected, and in constant demand, Miller is acknowledged as one of the more notable senior folk artists in the United States. He was featured in one of REM’s video’s. One of Miller’s neighbors recollected When he first started, we all laughed at him and said’Who wants that junk? In addition to the recognition he received from R. Miller’s artwork appeared on the December 2001 cover of TV Guide. Miller began receiving visitors from overseas. In 2006 Brenau University’s Simmons Visual Arts Center featured his works in an exhibit titled R. The Georgia Museum of Art organized a retrospective of Miller’s work in 2009. The exhibit, titled Lord Love You: Works by R. Miller from the Mullis Collection ran August 15 through October 24, 2009. It featured 83 paintings, drawings, sculptures and whirligigs by Miller. Please understand that all the folk artwork is handmade, and handmade items, by nature, have imperfections. Examine the pictures closely, as all imperfections are captured in the photos.
