Original, antique oil on panel Pennsylvania Folk Art landscape painting by Mary Jane Peale (signed MJ Peale), age 12 in 1838, inscribed and dated en verso, measuring 13″W and 21″H. Americana Folk art painting from possibly one of the most famous family of artists in American history. This painting in inscribed on the back ” To Mother”M. Peale 1839″ “Age 12. In addition to the inscription are a few sketches of birds, flowers, and trees.. Daughter of RUBENS PEALE, granddaughter of CHARLES WILLSON PEALE and and niece to REMBRANDT PEALE. The date of 1839 would place her at age 12 at the time, which is what is inscribed on the back. Her known works are mainly Still Life and Portraiture paintings. This piece is a wonderful example of Americana folk painting. In frame measurements are 22 1/2″ x 14 1/2; site measures are 18 1/2″ x 10 1/2. Her most interesting painting may be a small interior scene, depicting her elderly father working at his easel. Mary Jane Peale’s death, announced by the New York Times in 1902, signaled the end of the Peales’ reign as Philadelphia’s first family of painters. (Ogden: Peale Family of Painters). Condition: The frame is in fair condition and is not believed to be original. The painting, itself, is in good condition, with just a bit of craquelure noted on the left side (trees/sky).
