This is a beautiful, antique 19th-century European genre scene oil painting depicting a classic folk subject: a young Dutch or Scandinavian peasant girl walking along a dirt path, softly plucking petals from a daisy. This timeless “He loves me, he loves me not” theme is rendered in a charming primitive style with a rich tonal landscape background. This piece is clearly signed K. Outcault in cursive script in the lower-left corner of the painting. Total Size (with frame): 23-3/4″ H x 17-1/2″ W. Note: The back of the piece features an older wood construction and is completely blank with no further writing or labels. The artwork is housed in its stunning, heavily decorated antique ornate gilt (gold-colored) frame. The frame features gorgeous corner scrollwork molding, a textured panel finish, and an elegant studded/beaded interior border trim. Painting: True antique condition. Shows authentic signs of age including some visible paint flaking, craquelure, and minor paint loss spots primarily in the upper right sky and lower path areas (as well as near the signature). Please see photos for a close look at the surface texture. Frame: Shows minor chipping to the gold plaster molding (specifically on the outer left edge) and overall light wear to the gilt finish, perfectly complementing its rustic antique aesthetic.
