Miller Signed Folk / Outsider Art – Dinosaur Animal Painted on Tin Roofing Material. 32 Inches Long x 12 Inches High. Miller was born July 22, 1912, in Gainesville, Georgia. He passed away March 7, 2006. Miller started work at a local cotton mill at the early age of twelve, he would walk to work at this same job for the next twenty years. Finding religion as a young man, Miller preached in tent revival meetings in Georgia and at the Free Will Baptist Church. Miller lived most of his life in Rabbittown, GA, just north of Gainesville. Began making art at about the age of sixty-eight when he retired. He created whirligigs and soon the hillside next to his house was covered with colorful spinning windmills as he called them and. Metal cutout and painted figures. He used found materials discarded by others such as old bicycle parts, tin house siding and other scraps to create unique and eclectic objects including the cut-out tin animals for which he is best known. He cut tin in the shape of animals, devils, angels, and Blow Oscar, (a rendition of a man who would blow his horn every time he passed by). He would paint the tin and sometimes attach it to crudely assembled wooden pieces. He gained widespread fame in 1984 after the band REM filmed Left of Reckoning among Millers art. Miller’s work is highly collected and he is considered one of the “elder” statesman of Folk Art. His work has been featured in REM music videos and the following museums. High Museum of Art, Atlanta. The Museum of American Folk Art, New York. Birmingham Museum of Art. Georgia Museum of Art. Kentucky Folk Art Center. Lehigh University Art Galleries. Morris Museum of Art. Museum of International Folk Art. New Orleans Museum of Art. Saint James Place Folk Art Museum, Robersonville, NC. 2006 Painted on tin roofing material. Ruben Aaron Miller was from Rabbittown, GA, and was a self-taught folk artist. After dropping out of school and going to work in a cotton mill at the age of 12, R. Was also an ordained minister for the Free Will Baptist Church. As a self-taught folk artist, he best known for his whirligigs, metal cutouts and drawings. One of Miller’s neighbors recollected, When he first started, we all laughed at him and said’Who wants that junk? His animal images range from bluebirds, chickens, pigs, and snakes. From watching National Geographic programs on TV he was inspired to create dinosaur images. And his human figures include red devils, angels, and Blow Oskar which is based on his cousin who would wildly blow his horn whenever he would drive by Millers property. In addition to the recognition he received from appearing in music videos of R. In the 1980s, Miller’s artwork appeared on the December 2001 cover of TV Guide. Miller began receiving visitors from overseas. In 2006 Brenau University’s Simmons Visual Arts Center featured his works in an exhibit titled R. The Georgia Museum of Art organized a retrospective of Miller’s work in 2009. The exhibit, titled Lord Love You: Works by R. Miller from the Mullis Collection ran August 15 through October 24, 2009. On July 23, 2012 an exhibit and “birthday party” was held at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center, in Gainesville, Georgia to recognize the works of R. Miller, and to celebrate the 100th birthday of the late artist. Further exhibitions, the inclusion of his work in museums’ permanent collections, and articles in such international publications as Raw Vision have contributed to Miller’s status as an elder statesman among Georgia’s self-taught artists. For sale is a superb original folk art painting on metal by the well regarded and highly collected Georgia Folk Art Outsider Artist, W D Harden. Provenance: Slotin Folk Art; Buford Georgia. Each one with wonderful detail and bright vivid coloration against a red background. Titled SNAKE DANCE lower left. Signed and dated 98 (1998) lower right. Painted on a found piece of corrugated metal roofing. With as expected dings and dents. No hanging hardware attached. Measurements: 24 1/8 x 26 3/4. Born and raised in Georgia, W. Became aware of and fascinated by folk/outsider art as a genre. Amazed by the work he witnessed it gave him the inspiration and courage to try his own hand creating his unique style of work! Has been successful as an Outsider/Self Taught artist ever since! Miller was a major influence in W. S work and later became a wonderful friend & mentor. Other early influences include: Tubby Brown, Rev. Bill Traylor, Jim Sudduth and many other great Southern Outsiders. The beautiful Gypsy Moon Child, New Mexico High Desert artist/musician extraordinaire, J. Sipe, Georgia Boys: Eric Legge & Jon Whiddon. In developing his signature character, and his new spin off characters with his artistic cosmology. The HellHound has become his most well known signature character, however over the years, W. Has diversified so much from his early years and is now found creating Flyin’ HellHounds, Helligators, abstract Totems, and often color’ific surprise abstract subjects such as musical, religious & political satire, that just jump out!
