Manner of Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638) Mid 19th Century Oil, Drunken Chit Chat
A fun and atmospheric oil interior of a 17th Century inn with three patrons smoking pipes and drinking together. The artist has inscribed with A. Brauwer at the lower right corner and the painting has been presented in a handsome gilt effect frame with elaborate foliate molding and a gilt effect slip. The frame has some areas of restoration and a contemporary gilt effect finish applied. The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. 1605, in Oudenaarde January 1638, in Antwerp was a Flemish painter active in Flanders and the Dutch Republic in the first half of the 17th century. Brouwer was an important innovator of genre painting through his vivid depictions of peasants, soldiers and other “lower class” individuals engaged in drinking, smoking, card or dice playing, fighting, music making etc. In taverns or rural settings. Brouwer contributed to the development of the genre of tronies, i. Head or facial studies, which investigate varieties of expression. In his final year he produced a few landscapes of a tragic intensity. Brouwer’s work had an important influence on the next generation of Flemish and Dutch genre painters. The painting depicts a fantastic whimsical scene of a man who appears to be dancing with a cane and dog. It is signed Bill Traylor in the upper center area. This painting has been through a very long & controversial ordeal. According to the previous owner, this painting belonged to his late grandmother “Fanny” who lived in Queens and he received it as a gift from his grandfather “Albert”. Another problem the autheticators had was that an old matting was glued down to the actual work and they strongly encouraged him to have it removed. Unfortunately he ended up taking it to one of the worlds most unprofessional “art conservators” who ended up damaging some of the paint on the mans shirt and cutting down the painting in order to remove the Matt. Value of this painting has been affected considering everything that it’s been through. Having stated all of the above please note that. The measurements are 10 x 14″ inches unframed and 14 x 18″ inches framed. The painting sits within a beautiful golden wood frame that is NOT original to the painting. With the exception of some paint loss and the fact the painting was cut down from its original size, we think that it is in overall good condition. But please look at the images for more details.
