Beautiful, haunting piece on black velvet – I have never seen one quite like this before. A rare example of original subject matter and subtle execution in this medium. It resembles a German Expressionist film set, moody and off-kilter. Painting measures approximately 26×16.25″ and has been framed to 27″ x 17.5″ x 1.35″. Antique Early African American Portrait Prosperous Handsome Black Man Folk Art

This attractive and exceptional rarity in oil on canvas measures 34 1/8″ x 24 1/2″ framed; 30″ x 24″ actual and depicts a handsome and affluent young African American gentleman wearing a dark coat with large brass buttons, a colorful wastcoat and black cravat. Dating from the 1840’s-50’s, the naively painted portrait has great presence and presents a confident man with close-cropped hair and intense gaze. It was cleaned and relined in the 1980’s (the era of the frame) and you will note extensive in-painting in the background and to his suit lower right. There is apparent bitumen crazing in his hair and neckwear and there is NO apparent inpaint to the face/head. There is notable separation of the original canvas from the lining canvas, especially upper left and the paint layer is stable overall. Black Folk Art African American Art Bass 1981 Oil on Wood

Offered this week is an Oil on Wood (I think Pine) with a twine rope stapled around it. It features a Blue Landscape. It is signed only “Bass 1981″. It is 11 inches tall by 7 inches wide by 1.5 inches deep. A second piece of rope has been stapled to the top as a hanging loop. This has been well cared for with no damage, except for where the 2 ends of twine meet on the top, the ends are starting to separate. BACKSTORY: In the early 1980’s my Dad operated an amusement arcade in a Weekend Market place called “Peddlers Village” in Wall Township, New Jersey. This strip mall was operated as weekend market only, to get around the “Blue Laws” that were in place in the 1970’s and 1980’s in parts of NJ. Because it was the only place open on weekends in the area, it was Very Busy, and attracted people from all over. He also happened to be African-American. I would judge him to be in his early 30’s at that time. He came in to the arcade one day, while my Dad was there, with this little painting. He asked if my Dad would be willing to trade a number of plays on the arcade games for it. It hung in my Parent’s house for over 30 years.
