Up for sale here is an original, one of a kind gouache and watercolor painting by well collected contemporary Polish painter and illustrator Jozef Wilkon (born 1930). This fine painting dates most likely from between 1973 and 1974 but it could be earlier. The artist’s title for this work is “Girl in Flower Garden, Noon”. The painting only measures 6 1/2 inches high by. 4 3/8 inches across. The total size with the frame comes to 15 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches. The painting is signed by the artist in upper right corner of the painting. This painting was also exhibited at the very popular Chicago area Museum, The Polish Museum of America, on April 4, 1976 and still retains the exhibition label on the back. The work was framed in the Chicago area at Schwartz Picture Frame Co in 1974 and has a framer’s label on the back as well. The painting is in very good condition with bright colors and no cracking or flaking to the paint. The backing paper has tears but we didn’t want to remove it since the labels were on there and the piece is still sealed quite well. Jozef Wilkon has illustrated many books over his lifetime and he is quite a prolific artist but not a whole lot of his original paintings are floating around out there. We will not alter the value of an item for export purposes. The item “OLD Polish Listed Artist Fine Folk Art PAINTING Artwork EXHIBITED at a MUSEUM $$” is in sale since Sunday, August 18, 2019. Frame Included: Yes by the way it’s a double frame folks! . ONLY the dark blue butterflies is for sale in this listing! “Hunt Slonem” Biography: Inspired by nature and his 60 pet birds, Hunt Slonem is renowned for his distinct neo-expressionist style. He is best known for his series of bunnies, butterflies and tropical birds, as well as his large-scale sculptures and restorations of forgotten historic homes. Slonem’s works can be found in the permanent collections of 250 museums around the world, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Whitney, the Miro Foundation and the New Orleans Museum of Art Since his first solo show at the Fischbach Gallery in 1977, Slonem’s work has been showcased internationally hundreds of times, most recently at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the State Russian Museum in St. In 2017 and 2018, he will be featured by the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Gallery in Bulgaria, and in countless galleries across the United States, Germany and Dubai. His flair and admiration for far-flung destinations has been a staple of his life since childhood. He would continue to seek out travel opportunities throughout his young-adult years, studying abroad in Nicaragua and Mexico; these eye-opening experiences imbued him with an appreciation for tropical landscapes that would influence his unique style. After graduating with a degree in painting and art history from Tulane University in New Orleans, Slonem spent several years in the early 1970s living in Manhattan. It wasn’t until Janet Fish offered him her studio for the summer of 1975 that Slonem was able to fully immerse himself in his work. His pieces began getting exhibited around New York, propelling his reputation and thrusting him into the city’s explosive contemporary arts scene. He received several prestigious grants, including from Montreal’s Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Cultural Counsel Foundation’s Artist Project, for which he painted an 80-foot mural of the World Trade Center in the late 1970s. He also received an introduction to the Marlborough Gallery, which would represent him for 18 years. As Slonem honed his aesthetic, his work began appearing in unique, contextual spaces. By 1995 he finished a massive six-by-86-foot mural of birds, which shoots across the walls of the Bryant Park Grill Restaurant in New York City. His charity work has resulted dozens of partnerships, including a wallpaper of his famous bunnies designed specifically with Lee Jofa for the Ronald McDonald House in Long Island. Slonem continues to draw great inspiration from history, forging palpable connections to the past through his art. His popular portraits of Abraham Lincoln reframe the historic figure as a pop-art icon, and he is currently working on a nine-foot-tall bronze sculpture of French explorer Robert De La Salle, to be displayed publicly in Louisiana. Yet Slonem’s most ambitious project has been his mission to save America’s often forgotten historic buildings. Realizing too many of the country’s architectural gems have fallen into disrepair, Slonem has found himself drawn to these national landmarks, inspired by the depth of their age and old-world beauty. Among his accomplishments are the restorations of Cordt’s Mansion in Kingston, New York; the Lakeside and Albania plantations of Louisiana; and the Scranton Armory and Charles Sumner Woolworth’s mansion in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His sixth and latest endeavor is Belle Terre, a storied property in South Kortright, New York. Numerous books and monographs have chronicled Slonem’s art, including Bunnies Glitterari Inc. 2014, Birds Glitterati Inc. 2017 and Hunt Slonem: An Art Rich and Strange Harry N. His studios and homes have been profiled in such books as When Art Meets Design (Assouline Publishing, 2014) and Pleasure Palaces: The Art and Homes of Hunt Slonem (powerHouse Books, 2007), among others. His latest will be Gatekeeper (Assouline Publishing), showcasing his reclamation of the Scranton Armory, and its transition from arms to art. OLD ANTIQUE Primitive Fine Folk Art OIL PAINTING of CHICAGO in 1832 artwork
Up for sale here is very interesting, antique, circa late 1890s to about 1915 framed oil painting on canvas by an unknown artist. The title of this painting is “Chicago 1832″ This fine oil painting is being offered in its original Arts and Crafts style antique solid wood black painted frame. The size of the oil painting only comes to 22 inches high by 36 inches across and with the frame 27 1/2 inches by 41 1/2 inches. There is no artist signature on the front or the back from what we can see. This painting was part of the collection that once belonged to the Evanston Historical Society located in Evanston, ILL the suburb directly attached to Chicago’s most North and East City limit. It was donated back to the Historical Society back in 1955 which you can see on the back but it does not have the Historical Societies name on it. This painting is going to require an extensive restoration and cleaning. This painting appears to have been stored in an attic in a very warm and dry environment. The entire surface of the painting has an even fine paint crackling. There is a three inch tear in the bottom center. The canvas is also worn and coming loose along the bottom edge of the painting where it meets the frame’s edge but it is not water damaged or stained. There is also a 1/2 inch tear in the canvas in the right center and another 1 1/2 inch tear near the largest tear pictured. There are a few fine paint scratches to the surface of which most would lighten up or disappear once the painting was cleaned and re-varnished. This is a wonderful piece of antique folk art.
