Antique 19th Century New England Winter Landscape Folk Art Oil Painting Signed

Antique 19th century, c1850s, original New England folk art oil painting. Depicts a winter landscape scene complete with a large house on a lake. The lake is surrounded by detailed trees and foliage; another house can be seen further down with trees disappearing into the horizon. Above the scene a dark sky can be noted with ominous clouds rolling through. Very well done with super detail, especially in the trees and plants. Boasts great capture of light, depth and shadow. Medium is oil on canvas done in a Folk Art style. Canvas affixed to early stretcher bars with antique nails. Signed by the artist in the bottom right corner. Looks to read O. Battis ; worthy of further research. Has a great patina with lots of age toning and cracking to the paint which is typical of a piece with this much age. In my opinion the toning and cracking add to the character of the piece and enhance it by acting as a testament to its age and authenticity. Two small puncture holes along the right side but not noticeable until a closer inspection is done (see photo 8). Small knick to center of the painting. Eye catching and appealing. This is an antique folk art painting of a handsome gentleman wearing a gold Masonic pin on his shirt. Horace Bunday (1814-83) is a well listed artist, best known for his portraits of prominent Americans, whose paintings regularly sell for thousands of dollars. Signed and dated on reverse “H Bundy / Painter / 55″, and stamped “RL & G DRAKE / ARTISTS DEPOT / TROY NY”. The portrait is encircled in a faux oval inner frame. The painting measures approximately 30″ x 25″. Condition: Very good overall condition, scattered minor losses along the edges, several light scratches to upper left (please see photos) and scattered areas of inpainting to clothing and background.
