Original antique painting of a seaside landscape in New England. Oil on stretched canvas, 8″ x 16″ A small group of houses clustered on a shoreline under an overcast sky. A rocky outcrop in the foreground, a pair of small rowboats moored in the cove, several sailing boats on the ocean horizon, seabirds flying over the water. The skill level of the painting is on the level of folk art ; an attractive scene, evocative of simple country life on the coast of southern New England in the 19th century. Unsigned and undated, however this was clearly painted in the late 1800s. Exact location of this scene is unknown; probably the shoreline of either Rhode Island or Massachusetts, circa 1880s-1890s. The wooden stretcher is stamped with the patent date Oct. Artists’ Supplies and Stationary Regilding a Speciality 411 Broadway, Chelsea Massachusetts ———– The painting is in as-found condition, with surface scuffs and some paint loss.
