This listing is for the exceptional 19th c. American School folk art painting of a sailor and his family pictured above. A remarkable 19th c. American folk art interior scene by an unknown artist. This work depicts a sailor’s return home to his family, including an elderly couple and a little girl. The scene is set near the fireplace, where a kettle releases steam. Each object is rendered in meticulous detail. Even the woven basket on the ground contains hundreds of tiny brushstrokes to mimic the effect of the weave. The work is oil on canvas laid to board and appears unsigned. It is housed in a period frame. This work was formerly in the collection of the Saint Louis Art Museum and was deaccessioned to benefit its acquisition fund. 14 inches tall by 20 inches wide (painting). 18.5 inches tall by 24.5 inches wide (frame). Deaccessioned from the St. Acquired from the above. Condition : Canvas laid to board. Scattered inpainting throughout, primarily to address craquelure (refer to photo under blacklight). Surface craquelure commensurate with age. Typical wear and small losses to frame. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed!
