Very early hand painted, & carved folk art. Hand & forearm tattooed trade sign? I’m no expert and not positive but! I have had a number of reputable people look and they all have very similar opinions. Anyway it was once nailed up or attached to wall or?? By looking at the painted images flowers, rope, butterfly, ECT ECT and flag the flag appears to have 9 stars in Wich there was very few flags made during civil war period. With 9 stars This info was pulled off a Google site. Or perhaps the maker just simply put what he could fit 9 stars. There are marks, dings and two tiny holes near the lower right hand corner, where something was attached. Over the years this 2 board Sign has separated slightly right underneath the word Decorator. RARE 19TH C DOCUMENT BOX IN THE BEST OLD ORIGINAL FOLK ART PAINTED DECORATION. AN EXTREMELY FINE AND EARLY 19TH CENTURY FOLK ART DECORATED DOCUMENT BOX IN WONDERFUL RED, ORANGE, WHITE, BLACK AND BLUE DECORATION OVER THE ORIGINAL WINDSOR GREEN BASE COAT. EXTRAORDINARY EARLY PAINT DECORATIONS. THIS BOX HAS A FLAT TOP AND IS MADE OF EARLY NAILED CONSTRUCTION. IT STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL IRON HINGES. THE INTERIOR HAS REMNANTS OF A 1868 NEWSPAPER FROM QUEBEC CANADA WHICH WAS USED TO SELL THE BOX AS CANADIAN… THE PAINT IS ALL ORIGINAL. IT IS GRUNGY AND WELL DONE. THE TOP HAS THE USUAL PAINT WEAR FROM MUCH USE BUT THE REST IS IN EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION, (see photos). IT HAS A VERY RARE FOLK ART INVERTED HEART DECORATION THROUGHOUT. THE PAINT IS WELL OXIDIZED but STILL BRIGHT. This BOX is “Untouched”. THIS BOX IS MUCH, MUCH BETTER IN PERSON. THE PAINT IS SPECTACULAR. The box is 14 1/2″ wide, 8″ deep and 8 1/4 tall. It exhibits only the typical wear and tear you would see from 200 years of use as I have shown in the photos. A truly great find especially in such fine condition and surface, usually these are in poor shape and have been stripped of all their paint and patina. Minor paint loss as seen.
